Amazon.com essential recording With valuable assistance from producer Rick Rubin, the Peppers find just the right blend of punk, funk, and hip-hop. Even with a running time of 74 minutes, this 1991 breakthrough has continuity and cohesion both within and across the 17 cuts. Riding Flea's surging bass, Anthony Kiedis delivers his explicit lyrics with a rapper's flair, extolling the virtues (and outlining the dangers) of sex and drugs. Plaintive ballads such as "Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied," and the hit "Under the Bridge" give the album depth and provide contrast to the raw energy of "Mellowship Slinky in B Major," "Funky Monks," and "Give It Away." Rubin masterfully fuses John Frusciante's raunchy guitar with the irresistible grooves. --Marc Greilsamer

One of the best rock albums ever released December 28, 2008 Alex Goldberg (Brooklyn, NY) From the second "Power Of Equality" starts, the sheer energy of this album becomes apparent. On this release, the Chili Peppers took their funk-infused sound and took it to a whole new level. This album, while very put together and well produced, sounds raw and authentic as can be. The Bass, courtesy of Flea, is not the same slap bass we heard in the 80s, it's funky, heavy but very smooth and polished. The drums are heavy hitting and precise as it gets, completely coordinated to the bass. John provides some seriously funky guitar on some tracks and very melodic grooves on others. The vocals are pure energy, Anthony Keidis has this almost rap-like style on here which sounds great. If you're into the chili's more recent work, this album is quite different. If you're into their 80s p-funk days, this album is somewhat different too. But anyway you look at it, this album is just stunningly good. That's the magik of this band, they can switch their style up and still get it right without isolating their fans.

NOT A NEW ROCK ALBUM FOR THE WORLD, BUT NEW TO ME October 13, 2008 Josef Bush (Phoenix, AZ) I've been listening to the Chili Peppers for a decade or so now, and finally I've decided to invest in them; that is, in their sound, their musicianship. It's part of my method to avoid being influenced by industry bally-hoo. We're all victims of Spin in virtually every arena of American life. Half the cost of every product (and every political candidate) is publicity. Not to lecture. I don't buy the Peppers to affirm social theories; I buy the music for emotional and artistic stimulation and insight. What I particularly like is A.K.'s singing. The vocalizing of most men seems to me dull and uninspired, but Tony the K is wildly different. He's better than his publicity, with his unpredictablec but secure, hot fusion of Gil Scott-Heron's breathiness and Cher's trombone riffs, he creates a new way of singing and therefore of listening that I find fascinating.

Memo to 3,000 FM rock stations............1991 Please play a band called the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their songs, "Under the Bridge" and "Give it Away" should be continually played till you have brainwashed the unwashed masses into believing this is a cool new band. Do not refer to any of their earlier LP's or that they came from alternative music scene. The band have been around a number of years and it is to your benefit to avoid mentioning their history as we had no intention of supporting them during their early years. Refer to the band in a familiar way, i.e "The Chili Peppers," and become sponsors of any up coming tours. Their music is a little rock, a little funk some rap and they do ballads as well. Their stuff is as bland as 70's wallpaper and inoffensive, and yet we can still market them easily as bad boy rockers. Recent discussions with the "Chili Peppers" management indicate a long term desire of the band to make lame Cd's, as unoriginal as possible for years to come. Their manager described the bands attitude as follows. "Like a transsexual not knowing if he wants to stand up or sit down to piss, the Chili Peppers will keep making CD's neither just rock, nor funk, or rap and yet the money and image will be the deciding factors."
