Synopsis:

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton join forces again in a big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller "Sweeney Todd." Depp stars in the title role as a man unjustly sent to prison who vows revenge, not only for that cruel punishment, but for the devastating consequences of what happened to his wife and daughter. When he returns to reopen his barber shop, Sweeney Todd becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who "shaved the heads of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard from again." Joining Depp is Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney's amorous accomplice, who creates diabolical meat pies. The cast also includes Alan Rickman, who portrays the evil Judge Turpin, who sends Sweeney to prison and Timothy Spall as the Judge's wicked associate Beadle Bamford and Sacha Baron Cohen is a rival barber, the flamboyant Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Burtons' BEST MOVIE EVER   January 8, 2009
jewessjen (Minneapolis, MN)
This is an important occasion in my life for it is the first time I have ever taken to a musical (which I usually find really silly) to the point where I played the soundtrack while I applied my makeup in the morning, while I ate breakfast, while I drove to work and even while I cooked dinner at night...
I sing Helenas' part of the stirring 'My Friends' while I walk my dogs at the dog park-
"I'm your friend too, Mr. Todd.
If you only knew, Mr. Todd.
Ooh, Mr. Todd,
You're warm
In my hand...
You've come home...
Always had a fondness for you,
I did."
Oh, I sing this soundtrack constantly. My co-workers just love it when I break into `By the Sea', which I do at least twice a day, kissing my boss. I sing 'A Little Preist' while I use the snow blower at the top of my lungs outside and I don't care who hears me.
This music is addictive. Who cares if Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter aren't the most excellent vocalists on the planet, they are perfect to me. If I ever met Helena, I'd drop to my knees and cry. She's that good in this role. I can't imagine anyone better for Sweeney Todd and I'm glad Tim Burton picked them in his infinite wisdom. This movie helps me get through my boring life and I'm grateful for it!
This is like chocolate for the soul.

3 out of 5 stars Depp and Burton again   January 8, 2009

I love Johnny Depp. I love Tim Burton. I love Horror, and I love musical theatre. It is almost like this movie was made just for me. The sets are magical looking. The atmosphere created by Burton is creepy and awsome...I guess this flick fell short from me because the play is so simple and basic yet horrible and fun..and this just seemed...well made up. I you have never seen this performed live you may enjoy it more than I did.

Depp can not sing, not even close. Not that the songs were worth listening to! Not a tune that would make it to the radio.
You would have to be demented to be in any way involved in bringing this sorry stage presentation to the big screen........why?

5 out of 5 stars The best Sweeney Todd yet!   January 2, 2009

Absolutely wonderful! I have since listened to the soundtracks of the stage recordings, and in my opinion, Helena Bonham Carter does a far better job than Angela Lansbury and Patti Lupone ever did. Nothing against them, but Ms. Lansbury's singing gets grating after a few seconds, and Patti Lupone, while excellent as Evita, is far too stiff for Mrs. Lovett. Helena Bonham Carter may not be a professional singer, but she sings it far better than the other two ladies, and is amusing, believable, and likeable (no small feat, considering her character). And Johnny Depp is simply superb. Yes, they're not professional singers, but the entire cast does an awesome job that comes across far more naturally and beautifully than the other recordings I've heard. If you doubt it, take a . . . listen to the samples on Amazon.com. Compare how the three measure up to each other.
