Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Alaska September 17, 2008 Elizabeth A. Cardarelle (Mpls., MN USA) This is a fantastic DVD of the Goo Goo Dolls playing live in Alaska. The cool thing is that instead of doing the "unplugged thing" on MTV, they play acousticallly on glaciers and in other remote parts of Alaska. The scenery is beautiful, and it is fun to see the band interact with the people who live there. While the whole production feels very intimate and genuine, it was the performances themselves that blew me away. The music is so raw and pure. Just the guy's with a guitar, a bass, and a very small drumset. No additional vocals, keyboards, or percussion. While the instrumentation speaks for itself, it is the emotional force of John's raspy yet smooth vocals that really resonated with me. It would be great to have a CD available of this endeavor, as well.
Tour of Alaska August 12, 2007 Duckman (Marlboro, MA United States) It's a great dvd if you're interested in a tour of Alaska and acoustic songs of the Goo Goo Dolls. Very nice pictures of Alaska, its people and countryside, but limited hard driving music. A lot of interviews, meeting of different group members and Alaskan residents. Just beware it's more of a tour guide and pictures than a concert of the Goo Goo Dolls.
Breathtaking! May 30, 2007 Brandon L. Harlow (Colonial Heights, VA United States) Any fan (casual or die hard) will enjoy this collection of great songs coupled with amazing shots of Alaska. The Dolls seem to really be enjoying themselves, especially Robbie, and you can tell how well it translates into the music. My faves include: the iceberg, the high jump with the locals and Johnny jokingly complaining about the non-smoking bars. I also have the Alanis in the Navajo disc, but this is visually more exciting.
Goo Goo Dolls "Unplugged" in Alaska May 26, 2007 K. Gallagher (Dayton, Ohio USA) Goo Goo Dolls - Live in Alaska (Music in High Places Series) What a hidden little gem of a video. This is so awesome. The scenery is breathtaking and the music is beautiful. It's great to see the band interact with the locals.....mud sliding with the children, sledding with the dogs, and just plain having fun. John is correct, he does have an awesome job being able to play his guitar on top of a 12 foot chuck of ice. If you are a true GGD fan, RUN, don't walk to get this one. It's worth every penny! Enjoy!
Just great! April 28, 2007 J. Brown (Norwood, MA USA) Fix the writeup on this title please. It isn't Wynonna Judd, it's the Goo Goo Dolls! Anyway, I bought the Live in Buffalo CD/DVD and fell in love with the Goo Goo Dolls. My wife got me this DVD (my first Music in High Places title). It's a combination of a music DVD and a travel show. The scenery in Alaska is just great and I love the stripped down versions of the songs, especially the drummer just using a shaker and a tamborine on several of the songs. Make sure you watch it all the way through for the "making of" type stuff and the "music only" selection. You get an extra two songs that way!
