Amazon.com As the triumphant start of a trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring leaves you begging for more. By necessity, Peter Jackson's ambitious epic compresses J.R.R. Tolkien's classic The Lord of the Rings, but this robust adaptation maintains reverent allegiance to Tolkien's creation, instantly qualifying as one of the greatest fantasy films ever made. At 178 minutes, it's long enough to establish the myriad inhabitants of Middle-earth, the legendary Rings of Power, and the fellowship of hobbits, elves, dwarves, and humans--led by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the brave hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood)--who must battle terrifying forces of evil on their perilous journey to destroy the One Ring in the land of Mordor. Superbly paced, the film is both epic and intimate, offering astonishing special effects and production design while emphasizing the emotional intensity of Frodo's adventure, and ends on a perfect note of heroic loyalty and rich anticipation. After the breaking of the Fellowship, Frodo and Sam journey to Mordor with the creature Gollum as their guide in The Two Towers. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) join in the defense of the people of Rohan, who are the first target in the eradication of the race of Men by the renegade wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) and the dark lord Sauron. Fantastic creatures, astounding visual effects, and a climactic battle at the fortress of Helm's Deep make The Two Towers a worthy successor to The Fellowship of the Ring, grander in scale but retaining the story's emotional intimacy. With The Return of the King, the greatest fantasy epic in film history draws to a grand and glorious conclusion. The trilogy could never fully satisfy those who remain exclusively loyal to Tolkien's expansive literature, but as a showcase for physical and technical craftsmanship it is unsurpassed in pure scale and ambition, setting milestone after cinematic milestone as Frodo and Sam continue their mission to Mordor to destroy the soul-corrupting One Ring. While the heir to the kingdom of Men, Aragorn, endures the massive battle at Minas Tirith with the allegiance of Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf, Frodo and Sam must survive the schizoid deceptions of Gollum, who remains utterly convincing as a hybrid of performance (by Andy Serkis) and subtly nuanced computer animation. Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have much ground to cover; that they do so with intense pacing and epic sweep is impressive enough, but by investing greater depth and consequence in the actions of fellow hobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), they ensure that The Return of the King maintains the trilogy's emphasis on intimate fellowship and remains faithful to Tolkien's overall vision. By ending the LOTR trilogy with noble integrity and faith in the power of imaginative storytelling, The Return of the King, like its predecessors, will stand as an adventure for the ages. --Jeff Shannon and David Horiuchi

Good but extended version is better November 10, 2008 LB (North Carolina) The set is great for the price but if I had it to do over I would have spent the extra money and gotten the extended edition.
The Lord of the Rings Movie Trilogy October 15, 2008 Daniel Misciagna 'The Lord of the Rings' movie trilogy, especially the extended edition, is the best thing that has ever happend to the world of fantasy-cinema. Being a committed fan to the world of Tolkien, I couldn't wait to finally own all three movies in this fascinating saga on DVD. I own both the theatrical released DVDs and Extended Edition DVDs of 'The Lord of the Rings' movie trilogy. I'd recommend both versions to any Tolkien fan for the special features and scenes in both editions. It was once said that it would be impossible to make 'The Lord of the Rings' book trilogy into a live-action movie. One director proved that statement dead wrong. Peter Jackson is beyond genius for the way he envisioned and portrayed Middle-earth to the world of cinema. He and his crew did an excellent job at choosing the right actors and actresses to play roles that couldn't have been portrayed any better by anyone else. One of my favorite actors in the trilogy is Sean Bean who played Boromir in 'The Fellowship of the Ring'. I think his role was powerful in that movie and am of the opinion that he was overlooked for an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Role at the time. All in all, however, every actor and actress in all three films offered very powerful and fine acting for their roles. The Oscar winning make-up and costume design was done very well in all three films. Thanks to those who are involved in the WETA Workshop, fantasy characters, the orcs and elves for instance, look very believable. The armor and weapons that were crafted by WETA Workshop are very unique and are as described in Tolkien's books. Each film, especially 'The Return of the King', has brilliant art design done by the finest film artists of our time. Peter Jackson knew exactly what he was doing when he decided to direct the trilogy in his home land of New Zealand. It has such wonderful landscape that really looks and feels like Middle-earth! Howard Shore did a superb job with the Oscar winning musical (score). It gives you a sense that you are really experiencing the world of Middle-earth in the way it ought to be because it is soothing at some points and powerful at others. The special fx, done by WETA Digital, is still by far the best in movie history (in my opinion). The climactic battle scenes in the trilogy are phenomenal and look so realistic: even though its mostly CGI. The cinematography was very well done due to the fact that the actors and actresses who portrayed hobbit roles looked the way they are supposed to look: smaller compared to almost everyone and everything else. The entire storyline in all three films relates very closely to J.R.R. Tolkien's book trilogy. As a matter of fact the most powerful and compelling thing about all three films is the storyline. This is where I hold my upmost respect to three of the best fantasy films ever made! Like the books, I almost felt as if I personally knew, and cared for, almost all of the characters because of how well they were portrayed throughout the entire trilogy. This is where the director, cast, and crew highly succeeded because it almost made me feel as if I were transported into to the story and were a part of it. Almost the same exact feeling I get when reading 'The Lord of the Rings' book trilogy! Tolkien would have been proud! Though a few, but understandable, liberties had to be taken in each movie when it comes to the storyline, it hardly effects each films greatness at all. Time, budget, and plot flow were some of the main things that had to be considered in order satisfy the audiences and critics watching the films. Besides, many other films that are based on books don't fair too well anyway. So consider this movie trilogy as a gift. In the end, however, everything that was done to make 'The Lord of the Rings' go from book to cinema finally paid off in the best way possible. Each film grossed high box office records and because they were so spectacular and related so closely to the books, all three movies got good reviews from movie critics and won Oscars as well as gained large support from a growing number of fans. No other director, or cast and crew, could have done a better job at making Middle-earth come to life on the big screen in the way it finally did after so many years. I have chosen one scene from each movie in 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy that account as my three most favorite scenes. In 'The Fellowship of the Ring' my favorite scene is "The Breaking of the Fellowship". In 'The Two Towers' my favorite scene is "Forth Eorlingas". And in 'The Return of the King', the best and most powerful movie in the trilogy, "The Siege of Gondor" is my most favorite scene in all of the trilogy. But what it comes down to is that all of the scenes shown in 'The Lord of the Rings' movie trilogy are great because they create one of the greatest movie storylines ever used in fantasy movie history. Each scene has its great surprises. Some viewers judge 'The Lord of the Rings' movie trilogy to be too long. The fact of the matter is the trilogy is obviously based on a huge story, so its no wonder why each movie is so long in time length. The Special Extended DVD Editions of all three films are longer, but better, than the theatrical editions because there are added scenes that fill in some gaps in the storyline of each film. Most of the added scenes cause the trilogy to relate more closely to J.R.R. Tolkien's books and even give more in depth information to the new comers of Middle-earth: and that's always a good thing. The special features from the Extended Edition DVDs are not a thing to miss out on anyway. If you are a new comer, then prepare for one of the longest and greatest fantasy stories ever told! You will not be disappointed with Tokien's world if you love fantasy. But never take these stories too literal. Remember that its all fantasy after all, not the real world. I'll go ahead and close this review by saying that if you don't already own or have never even seen `The Lord of the Rings' movie trilogy, then I highly recommend you buy both the theatrical and extended DVD editions of all three movies. Each film offers plenty of action, adventure, fantasy, drama, and even some good comic relief at times. They are not to be missed by anyone who loves great tales that reflect upon our own world when it comes to good vs. evil.
