Bring Home Wonder Woman January 6, 2009 Reconnecting To My Childhood First Came Superman: Doomsday, then Justice League: The New Frontier followed by Batman: Gotham Knight, now on March 3rd we'll finally get to see Wonder Woman go out on her own. This straight to DVD feature length animated production from Warner Premiere and DC Universe will tell the early origin of amazon princess Diana, better known as Wonder Woman. I am excited for this release to finally depict the last of DC's big three in her own realm of animation and the talent involved can only seem to make things better. Keri Russell (Famous for Felicity, and more recently Waitress, August Rush and Adam Sandler's Bedtime Stories) is playing the young Wonder Woman and based on the quality of her recent work she should do well with the role. Nathan Fillion (who co-starred with Russell in Waitress) will be voicing Steve Trevor. Alfred Molina (Doc Oc in Spider-man 2) is the God of War Ares, Virigina Madsen (Co-star of Jim Carrey in Number 23) is Diana's mother Queen Hippolyta and Rosario Dawson (of Seven Pounds with Will Smith) will voice Dianna's rival amazon Artemis. The story is said to be about the amazon princess Diana, on the secluded Island Themyscira, first meeting Steve Trevor, a pilot who crash lands on the island of no men. Diana must then fight in a tournament against fellow competing amazons for the right to escort Trevor back to the 'world of man' and along the way it seems the God of War Ares causes some trouble. Wonder Woman is based on Greek Mythology so Ares appearance makes sense and should make for some good action sequences in this Pg-13 rated feature. This single disc version only contains the feature itself with special features of a commentary by the filmmakers and a look at the next animated project in a First Look at Green Lantern featurette. This product is also available with more special features in a Two-Disc Special Edition DVD or in high definition on Blu-Ray with the same special features as the Two-Disc. All three versions contain the film in widescreen format. Remember it is rated PG-13 and is aimed at an older audience but with the exception of some intensely dark animation in Gotham Knight nothing I've seen in Doomsday or New Frontier would lead me to think this innappropriate for any child grade school and up. Still parent's should use their own discretion. This original animated feature looks to be great and I have been anxious to see it since the special features announced for Batman: Gotham Knight had announced a first look featurette regarding it. The new design on Wonder Woman is very respectful to the character, and I find is actually the closest design yet in animation to what you'd expect a princess born of greek mythology to look like. After the first look featurette on the Gotham Knight DVD along with the voice casting, quality of recent DC Universe animated features and the fact that Bruce Timm (best known for Batman: The Animated Series) is producing I feel comfortable already rating this 5 stars for anyone who is a fan of well depicted female heroes or Wonder Woman herself.
