The comedy/drama Freaks and Geeks limped through its sole season on NBC in 1999 before being expelled by the network--but not before earning critical acclaim and a devoted fan base that fought valiantly to keep it on the air. Now all 18 episodes have been released in this long-awaited boxed set, which allows longtime fans and first-timers alike to enjoy one of television's most poignant and funny programs about high school.

Created by writer-comedian Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow (The Larry Sanders Show), Freaks and Geeks followed the Weir siblings--former math whiz Lindsay (Linda Cardellini of the Scooby-Doo feature films and ER) and her younger brother Sam (John Francis Daley)--as they navigated the perils and pleasures of a Michigan high school circa 1980. What separated Freaks and Geeks from most other scholastic series was its brutal honesty--Lindsay and Sam, as well as their friends and parents, were given very human personas that showed failure, malice, indecision, and moments of great clarity. Likewise, the plotlines rarely offered pat solutions to the characters' conflicts--the show unfolded in a naturalistic manner, which was a welcome respite for viewers tired of flashy high school dramas. When combined with its smart dialogue and winning performances (the cast included SCTV veteran Joe Flaherty and Spider-Man star James Franco, as well as the sublime and criminally underrecognized Martin Starr and Seth Rogen as Sam's pal Bill and dry-witted Ken, respectively), the show became a haven for fans of quality television, if only for a brief period of time.

The six-disc boxed set provides over 40 hours of supplemental material, which should satiate even the most obsessive of fans. Twenty-nine separate commentaries from the show's creators, cast (and as some of their parents!), composer Mike Andrews, and fans are included, as are 60 deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, and cast auditions. However, the most striking extra is the warmth that radiates from the commentary participants--their pleasure in taking part in such a quality program is palpable, and will undoubtedly be echoed by all who watch these discs. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best of All Time   December 30, 2008
Pat Shand (Freeport, NY USA)
As a fan of Judd Apatow's recent movies, I was thrilled to learn that he also served as an Executive Producer and writer on "Freaks and Geeks," which also starred some of the best actors from his film. So I came for the Judd Apatow humor... and stayed for everything. "Freaks and Geeks" is an utterly flawless high school comedy drama that is acted by some of the most talented young people around and written by truly hilarious people who bring out the funny in every day life, and are also deeply aware of the aches and pains of high school life. It's one of the most realistic shows ever, finding humor in awkward facial expressions and naturalistic (but still highly quotable dialogue), and merely watching will show how much fun the cast and crew had in making this brilliant show.

The storylines are about a group of "freaks" (stoners and the like) and a group of "geeks" in high school. The stories often overlap, and the various stereotypes of day to day high school life are studied, torn apart, and rendered utterly real. Seeing the different groups interact is so great, and I love that each character is given a chance to develop and have a really strong backstory. They're all hilarious, they're all heartbreaking in their own way, and their character arcs are all done in such an achingly real way.

The best way that I can describe it is like My So-Called Life meets Superbad, because the way that they manage to balance the true to life drama with the comedy is superhuman. It's hard to talk about the show, really, because talking at length about either the cast or the writing comes off as gushing, because it's all just so damn good. But what the heck. I'll gush away. The cast is fantastic, from the mathlete turned freak Linda Cardellini to her geek brother John Francis-Daley to the drum obsessed Jason Segel to the snarky Seth Rogen to the bad boy James Franco to the awkward Martin Starr and everyone else, they're all fantastic and they all transcend their roles and any stereotypical adjectives I can apply to them.

Quite simply, this show rocks. If you like television, you need to own this. If you ever went to high school, you need to own this. It's universally enjoyable, heartbreaking, and hilarious. I'm in love with the Freaks and Geeks of McKinley High School.

10/10 Classic.

What a shame the series ran only one season. It is so well written and perfectly cast. My 15 year old started to watch it with me and I later found him in the middle of the night finishing the whole series! The added features, outtakes and commentary are fun to watch too. It is well worth every penny, don't miss this one.

It truly is a shame that this incredible show only lasted one season, but this season really does deliver, in every way possible! Fantastic acting, writing, music, and more. I am happy with the condition of the box set, and it arrived quickly after I placed the order. I highly recommend this show to all fans of shows like "The Wonder Years" and "My so-called Life".
