It's almost too dramatic to say that the third season of Cartoon Network's supremely silly animated series Sealab 2021 was controversial, but there's no denying that it's a hot-button issue for the show's legion of devoted fans. The crux of the problem is the untimely death of voice actor Harry Goz, who played Sealab's questionable "leader" Captain Murphy; without Goz's contributions to anchor the show's free-wheeling and frequently surreal adventures, the third-season episodes were deemed by fans to be in a freefall, and Murphy's replacement, ex-football coach "Tornado" Shanks (voiced by Goz's son Michael), was greeted with something less than enthusiasm. Regardless of which side you choose in the great Sealab debate, there are still laughs to be had in the 13 episodes compiled in this double-disc set, especially in "Tourist Season," which has Murphy turn Sealab into a tourist trap; "Red Dawn," with Murphy leading the crew in a Communist revolution (which inspired the set's striking cover art); and the doggedly weird "Return to Oblivion," which sends a tentacled Cartoon Network rep to the lab to see if it can be saved from its own self-destructive ways (it can't). Extras for season 3 are somewhat slight: there are two early pilots from creators Adam Reed and Matt Thompson, rough versions of an unfinished episode and "Dearly Beloved Seed" (these are billed as unaired episodes), a featurette on "Stormy" Waters, and a clutch of commentaries, most of which are gags save for one from toonzone.net's Karl Olson, who discusses "Tornado Shanks." --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars I like the show   December 22, 2008

Bizarro! episode was my favorite but I bought seasons 1-4 and have enjoyed everyone of them equally. Besides, if you buy Season 1 and you laughed then buying Season 2 won't be too far out of line. However, if you bought seasons 1 & 2 then what's stopping you from finishing it off and buying 2 more seasons?

3 out of 5 stars The beginning of the end   October 9, 2008

After the death of Harry Goz, this show really suffered. Captain Murphy was EASILY the funniest aspect of this show. Shanks can't hold a candle to Murph. And the supporting cast was just there to be victimized by Murphy. This show should have been canceled after Harry Goz died.

3 out of 5 stars Has it's moments.   October 24, 2007

If you are a fan like me, you'll want it to complete the collection and because it has Harry Goz's Last episodes. It definately has its moments and "Stormy Waters: Pundit" is a fun extra. It may be unfortunately the least good season of the show but don't write the rest of the show off because season 4 is awesome!

2 out of 5 stars hard crash for a once great show   December 8, 2006

This DVD set isn't worth buying. The only episodes worth watching are the ones with Captain Murphy still on them. Replacing the genius of Captain Murphy is the horrible Tornado Shanks and the rest of the season follows this trend until you'll find yourself saying this is virtually un-watchable. Horrible death for a great series.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best   August 27, 2006

Yes, I know Harry Goz died a bit into this season, but that's no excuse for some of the low quality jokes in the later episodes. Especially the first one with Shanks. Seasons one and two of the DVD's had some high quality commentary, while the only decent commentary on this set is the first episode with Shanks whereas they let a third party completely rip the episode, and the third season of the series, apart, literally saying "If you bought this I feel bad for you" I swear, its in the commentary and its very true. Season 3 just was not at all entertaining after Murphy died. The best episode of the set is one in the special features that never aired... Overall, I am strongly disappointed. I only gave it a 2 rather than 1 because Harry Goz diserves better.
