3 out of 5 stars Aaahhh. It's alright.   June 23, 2008
Daniel R. Steinmetz (Paso Robles, CA United States)
Perhaps I am just new to the Mecha Anime. I haven't seen too many of them before. I just don't much care for a show that has to have charactors that scream the name of the move every single time they use it and unless it includes an abundance of fan service I can't stand the every episode repetition of the same 45 second sequence of the main charactors robot merging with another charactor's. Got kind of old so I started fast forwarding through them.

If you like these sorts of anime's cool, buy it. If you are not sure rent this first and see if it's something you are into.

2 out of 5 stars Light-Hearted Mecha Anime But No True Greatness   May 14, 2008

I got this expecting a light-hearted humorous mecha anime. I'm sad to say it wasn't that much of anything yes there are mechs and robot fights in this show as well as a lot of fanservice enough to get sick of in as little as three episodes. While I knew there would be some fanservice it just seemed to me that the people who did this show just kept to that area and did not give much else such as a true character development for anyone. The show tries to give you some background stories for some of the characters like Anna and Go but all in all you really start to not care for any of them to much which is sad to say as they could have done such a better job with this series. The video is widecreen format as well as 5.1 English audio and 2.0 Japanese audio you don't get many extras just some previews on the first disk and some text-less intro/ending songs. So if your looking for a mecha anime but with a touch of humor I say go for Full Metal Panic this series is spectacular sadly unlike this one...

5 out of 5 stars A great mecha series without the psychobabble   May 10, 2008

I can sum this entire series up with only two words, "kick a55". I'm not too much a mecha fan. There is a small list of mecha series I can watch again. Godannar I seen a few times already. The series has alot going for it but die hard action and fan service buffs will appreciate this the most.

The story of course is seen that before. But who cares? It definitly works. The earth is attacked by a race of beast that came out of nowhere. To fight them off, earths heroes pilot giant robots. These mechas possess a wide range of attacks consisting of hand to hand techniques and weapons. They also combine with each other to form even more powerful robots. The main character Goh, loses his partner in battle when they defeat the beast. 5 years later he gets married and the beast resurface. Several plot twist takes place and this series quickly turns into a well thought out story, that I didn't find easy to predict. The episodes are their own for the most part and a deep plot doesn't really develop until towards the end. But each of the episodes range from very good to excellent. Mixing up lots of action, fan service, and comedy. I never felt bored once and this is one of the rare times filler episodes actually work. For the simple fact, it never became repetitive and something was always developing. The last few episodes are the best and they are worth the wait. The ending was excellent for an excellent series.

The characters are many and they're likable. The focus doesn't stay on the 2 main characters. Many others are examined during the series and you get an idea of their personalities. The voice acting is done very well for both languages, but I prefer the english cast.

The animation is excellent and well detailed. The mecha designs are awesome. The last mecha series I seen with this type of detail was Rahxephon. Although Godannar is great, it's slightly edged out by Rah. The animation is at it's absolute best during the over the top battles. The battles are fast paced and very enjoyable to watch. The only problems I have with the battles is the characters broadcasting each and every move before they do it. This was cool many moons ago but that's a trend that needs to die. Too many times I just wanted them to just shut up and fight. Plus I felt the same moves were used too often. The animation is also over the top concerning the fan service. There is lots of it. The soundtrack is excellent as well. I love the opening theme and I always let it play out. The background music works really well with the events taking place.

I really did enjoy this series but there were some things that did annoy me. However, not enough for a lower rating. I already mentioned the pre move broadcast. The fan service can quickly annoy someone with a short fuse for it. I found it to be too much at times and just plain mindless. I also felt it wasn't enough tragedy. I won't get too detailed with that because spoilers will be added.

Those who are looking for a mecha series, that is full of tragedy, depressing, angst ridden, and characters you would love to hate. Godannar is not for you. This is a lively, light hearted series that does get serious at times. But it's nothing that requires heavy thinking. This is not an NGE or Rah clone. There is nothing too deep about it. Godannar is a mecha action and comedy series. It doesn't try to be anything else. Which is what makes it great to me. If this sounds like the series for you, then pick it up. This is not for those looking for a mind rape.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, Rad, Incredible, take your pick...   February 27, 2008

Girls, Giant Robots, Fights, Explosions, that's a recipe for ALL three of my title words... VERY FUNNY, highly entertaining, and even emotion gripping (if you get into it like me) tho not too much. BUT, if you don't like that stuff, or Anti-Gravity women parts, then this show isn't for you...

This is for the Godannar: Complete Collection. First off i'm glad that i was able to get this series and in one place as well. The story basically revolves around Anna and Go, who he saves earlier in the story. But they get married and even though she's at the young age of 17. She sometimes does act like a 12 year old still. But she shows great potential in the piloting one of the giant robots on the base where Go and her mother whom is in charge of the base at the moment. I don't want to tell the whole story but they are on the verge of getting married when they get an call that a Memetic beast attack is happening. Its these monsters that they fought a few years ago. But its back and has started to spread across the planet. Also introduced early on are 5 other Robot fighter groups and they have a bigger role in the series soon enough.

Just so people know that if they are looking for a kid oriented anime show Godannar..isn't it. But you can see that from the box cover with the 2 women on front. There's overt and straight up focus on the females and there (uum huge assets and the jiggling effect) you'll see what i mean and some of the fighter pilots, the Robots and their outfits leave not much to the imagination. The story progresses over 26 episodes on 5 discs and also goes to the lives of the other people on the base, the mechanics and other folks that work on the robots that Anna, Go, Mira (a person from Go's past) and others.

It's cool that they focus on others instead of just one or two characters and their various struggles with all that is going on around them...beasts attacking, falling in love, first crushes, people from past showing up and relationship issues. All this while fighting breaks out all over the world. I love anime in general have a great liking towards anime series that focus on Robots and pilots.

Godannar delivers to me on all fronts, voice acting was pretty good, art and the overall direction of the series always seemed to be heading forward even when they were looking back on what had happened so far.

Excellent work...wish it didnt have to end though.
