Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
A blend of live-action and animation, this film centers on a fearful young boy (Macaulay Culkin) afraid to experience life because he's calculated the odds of an accident for every known activity. Chased by bullies, he winds up at the local library, where a bump on the head sends him into an animated universe, where his best friends are walking, talking books voiced by, among others, Patrick Stewart and Whoopi Goldberg. The Pagemaster (Christopher Lloyd) points the way to the exit, but the boy must first traverse the adventures of literary history, encountering everyone from Dr. Jekyll to Captain Ahab to Long John Silver. The animation is middling, but a worthy message makes this better children's entertainment than you'd expect. How can you fault a movie that encourages kids to pick up a book? --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Entertainment you will enjoy WITH your children.   November 30, 2008
Harold Wolf (Wells, IN United States)
What a delightful, fanciful, way to demonstrate to children what fun can be found in reading books. This story is of a young lad, Richard Tyler (Macaulay Culkin is huge again)and his adventures getting lost in the worlds tucked away between the pages of books at the library. He, along with his talking-book friends, seeks the library exit to escape dragons, pirates and many other adventures perfect for youth.

It is the one-liners and comments related to classic stories that may slip unnoticed by the young, but adds punch and laugh-out-loud fun for older youth and adults. An additional 5 stars for the ending which teaches about facing fears.

Family friendly, G rated but (warning) there is one word "damn" used, but only once. We bought one for all the grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

4 out of 5 stars great story   November 21, 2008
freedomrox (Mansfield, TX United States)
A boy who is afraid of his own shadow goes on a great adventure in book-land. He conquers his fears and learns to appreciate books at the same time. I'd say the movie's geared toward boys more so than girls. My sons love it and quote it for days after we watch it.

5 out of 5 stars family movie   September 21, 2008
Harmony Simpson (Colorado, USA)
This movie is a very good family movie and is nice enough my little sister can watch it.

3 out of 5 stars It's a wholesome movie for kids...   August 29, 2008
Shannon Lacorte (United States)
I read this book to my son first and then he wanted to see the movie. I bought him the DVD and we watched it together. We liked the fact that it was done in half animation and half real actors. That was fun and cool for my 4 yr old. He likes Macaulay Culkin also so that was a bonus. Christopher Lloyd is in it briefly here and there but not a lot. He plays the librarian and the voice of the animated Page Master. Lots of stars lend their voices to this movie which adds to its appeal. The movie is not too long either which helps with the younger children. Those are the positive things I have to say about the movie. The negative things I have to say are that it was slow in parts and it was tough keeping my active sons attention for the duration. He would become distracted during some of the movie and rarely watched it to the end. No, he does not have ADHD...lol. Also, if you are going into the movie thinking the animation is high quality, like computer type animation, you will be disappointed. It is just normal animation done with ink and paper (so to speak). It is a good little movie though and it has a fun storyline and a happy ending with a positive message. I would recommend it to folks with young kids or to anyone who just likes these types of movies.
