An Unusual Thriller October 9, 2008 Michael B. Druxman (Los Angeles) Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker Shadow Watcher Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake A good thriller might have a few plot holes, but if the director knows his stuff, the audience will enjoy the ride and only think about the far-fetched aspects of the film later. Certainly Alfred Hitchcock was a master at this kind of audience manipulation, and director John MacKenzie pulls it off with QUICKSAND (2002), a nifty action-suspense drama. In a typical Hitchcock-like scenario that not only reminds us of THE 39 STEPS, but also NORTH BY NORTHWEST, banker Michael Keaton travels to Southern France to investigate some suspicious activities of a film production that his bank is financing. He no sooner arrives when he finds himself framed for the murder of a local official, and also for embezzling money from his bank. And, if that isn't bad enough, the Russian Mafia, which is behind the nefarious scheme, has kidnapped Keaton's young daughter to insure his silence. Michael Caine co-stars as the over-the-hill movie star, who is playing the lead in the bogus film and may be the only person who can help Keaton prove his innocence and save his daughter. Yet, Keaton is not sure whether he can trust the actor, because Caine was the spokesman on the tape that threatened his daughter's life. Michael B. Druxman, author of ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD
Hmmm January 26, 2008 Danielle Muller (Sailing, sailing o'er the deep blue sea :)) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The movie itself? Not so good. Its a pretty predictable thriller that tends to drag itself on an on. While I will admit there are some interesting scenes, the movie really doesn't pick up until the very end when the music kicks in for the credits. Its just so haunting. Unfortunatly, I cannot say the same for the rest of the movie. To make a long story short, my opinion is if you do happen to decide to pick this movie up, don't expect greatness. Although Michael Keaton and Cane aren't bad in and of themselves, the rest of the movie is pure...well I leave the rest of the sentance up to you to decide.
Excellent July 16, 2007 D. Lichok (Rio Rancho, NM) This was a sleeper, but I went on to discover that this was an excellent movie. Although Michael Keaton has perfoprmed better in other roles, this was a good reversal of a drama role from his standard comedy. Don't take that wrong, he is a great actor, something that these other so called actors could strive for in their performances.
Quick review for Quicksand. October 16, 2006 Puzzle box (Kuwait) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This low budget drama/thriller was very average even though it has both Michael Kane and Michael Keaton it was still slightly dull and tedious. There were a few interesting parts that I thought were hilarious especially with Kane and the extremely bad acting from the rest of the cast so I guess it wasn't all that bad. The story was about Keaton's character who plays a bank employee who goes to France in order to investigate a bad transaction or transfer of money that appeared on his computer, he soon becomes a fall guy for the Russian mafia and some drug ring so he needs to prevent the bad guys from killing him as well as clearing his name from a murder he did not commit. If you like both these actors then you might be interested in this film but don't expect a high caliber thriller or something like that.
A LITTLE MORE CAINE WOULD'VE HELPED January 31, 2006 Michael Butts (Martinsburg, WV USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
QUICKSAND is a formulaic, by the numbers thriller set in the world of corporate money laundering. Michael Keaton plays Martin Raike, a bank executive who goes to France to investigate the possibility of money laundering there. He meets a lovely CEO (Judith Godreche), who also introduces him to a has been action star (the ubiquitous Michael Caine). It isn't too long, though, that Keaton is set up to take the fall as the assassin of the crooked chief of police, and is on the run to prove his innocence. While the movie is certainly not a bad one, it would have been much better if there had been more of Caine in his delightful role as a has been actor. His scenes with Keaton are the only true energy in the picture and had there been more, QUICKSAND could have been a far more enjoyable film.
