Pitting Hong Kong legend Jet Li against UK tough guy Jason Statham seems like a surefire way to generate on-screen heat, and action fans will get a good deal of just that from the action-heavy War. Unfortunately, they also have to slog through a clichéd-riddled story about world-weary FBI agent Statham, who's gunning for Li, the master assassin that killed his partner years before, and who's currently neck-deep in a turf war between yakuza and triad gangs. Philip G. Atwell's style-over-substance direction doesn't help matters either, though he does have a way with shootouts and other combative set pieces. As for Li and Statham, their scenes together are surprisingly limited; there's also a twist in the film's final third that begs for serious suspension of disbelief. In short, those that found the duo's last movie team-up (2001's The One) lacking won't find much here to supplant that memory. The DVD includes three commentary tracks: one by Atwell, one by screenwriters Lee Anthony Smith and Gregory J. Bradley (it's the liveliest of the lot) and an audio trivia track that delves deep into the film's production, which is also covered in detail by nine separate featurettes. A gag reel and deleted/extended scenes round out the supplemental features. -- Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Not a martial arts movie   December 10, 2008
winnie (PA United States)
It seems many people think this would be a martial arts film due to the fact that Jet Li is in it, but not so.

The movie is not all that bad, it has a decent plot and storyline. Anyone who is a Jet Li fan will probably want to take a look as he steps out of his traditional role and goes for something a bit different. But don't hold your breath waiting for some riveting, high quality fight scenes or you will pass out before long. ;)

Is it a movie to add to your home collection? Perhaps not..best to rent it. But I think it is worth a bowl of popcorn and 2 hours. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment   December 6, 2008
Brunello (Honolulu)
I usually like films which star either Jason Stratham or Jet Li, but I found this one virtually unwatchable. The story is really mediocre and can't be carried by the action sequences. In the very first scene of the movie you can't even make out what the characters are saying since they are mumbling almost unintelligibly. What was the director thinking?

Stratham has recently had a string of poor films and this continues the trend. Not sure if it is his problem (just looking for quick bucks after some successful films) or screenwriters and directors.

I can't recommend it even to Jet Li fans.

3 out of 5 stars From J. Kaye's Book (and Movie) Blog   December 5, 2008
J. Kaye Oldner (http://j-kaye-book-blog.blogspot.com/)
Jason Statham and Jet Li on the screen together brought images. I went in thinking this would be a cross between WANTED and SPEED. There was plenty of action and shoot `em up screens, but again, it's the major complaint I'd had with most of the movies this year. The ending. It pissed me off to the point I was sorry I bothered watching the movie. Is this a backlash of the writer's strike or something? I don't expect much of a plot with these sorts of films, but please, give me something. That ending was beyond stupid!

3 out of 5 stars I admit, I watched it for Jason Statham   October 29, 2008

...and he did shoot a lot of people, so it was the action-packed kind of movie you've come to expect from him (I read rumors about there being a movie where he didn't shoot someone!). But it was also a 'who is the bad guy, really?' kind of movie that kept you guessing and wondering.

The ending was, in a lot of ways, pretty unresolved. You have an idea of what happened - perhaps - but there was also a little bit of wiggle room. It's not completely clear (I can't say much else without giving away too much plot!). So if you need a very clear-cut ending, with no dangling strings, this movie will drive you crazy. If you like that little bit of 'what if?', then this movie is great.

Mostly it was a very violent shoot'em up action thriller, nothing more, nothing less. Forgettable, but fun while you're watching it. I'd recommend it to people who like mindless action flicks.

JetLi and Jason- what a combination, their engrossing (film) personalities and their acting skills make this an enjoyable action flick.
