Product Description The story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father from three possible candidates told using songs by the popular 70s group abba. Based on the hit broadway musical. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 12/16/2008 Starring: Meryl Streep Colin Firth Run time: 109 minutes Rating: Pg13
Amazon.com The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia! deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer

Spread a little joy! January 9, 2009 J. Rogerson (Aiken, SC) Just as much fun on your home screen as it was in the theater. Continues to give enjoyment over and over again. As good as the Broadway production with much better scenery!
LOVE IT January 9, 2009 J. Blonigen (Upsala, MN USA) I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I am very impressed with Amazon.com's shipping! I preordered this movie and got it the day before it even came out in stores. Very happy customer.
Oh so fun January 9, 2009 J. Jones (Alton, IL) I have to admit I was a skeptic. I was not a huge fan of ABBA growing up but after the broadway show came out, which I did not see, I started to think maybe I will give it a shot and see what it is about. I like musicals. I sat down on a cold January 4th and watched it. I love it! I think my favorite part of the movie is Dancing Queen. I loved how the older woman carrying sticks on her back just threw them down and joined in the fun. By the way, the other reason I wanted to watch it is because it has Colin Firth in it. Not bad on the vocals. As for Pierce, back off people I have heard a lot worse. I think it catches you off guard more than anything. I have watched it twice now and even the second time, I really don't think he sounds that bad. It says a lot throwing yourself into a role that is completely different from what you normally do. He took a chance and had some fun. I like this movie. Guess I need to check out the Broadway production sometime.
Talk about a "feel-good" movie! And Meryl ROCKS! January 9, 2009 M. Torres (Los Angeles, CA) I absolutely LOVED this movie -- I had never seen the musical...actually, I'm not a big fan of musicals as a rule (except for film version of "Grease")...so I was pleasantly surprised to find myself smiling and dancing in my seat throughout the entire film. Talk about a feel-good movie! I wanted to be a member of the cast dancing alongside Meryl -- oh and Meryl, what a VOICE! Is there anything this woman can't do?! I have long admired her as an exceptional actress, but her choice to do this film raises my admiration even more, because it shows she knows how to have fun! And that's how I would sum up this movie: FUN! I wouldn't necessarily recommend this film to someone who doesn't like ABBA, but even if you only like a few of their songs you might be surprised to find yourself bopping along to ALL of the music!
Mom has watched it 3 times already. January 9, 2009 L. Judkins (Massachusetts) My Mom loved the movie and all the bonus features. No issues with this purchase.
