Not even the executives at Disney could have predicted the runaway success of this live-action movie inspired by Jay Ward's goofy 1960s cartoon character. Not only did George make a killing at the box office, but Disney's marketing wizards turned it into one of their best-selling videos. It's hard to begrudge the movie's success, even if this is the kind of mindless entertainment that caters to the lowest common denominator. In any case, it's obvious that kids love this movie, in which the idiotic George (Brendan Fraser) repeatedly swings into trees and attracts the attention of a lovely jungle explorer (Leslie Mann) who decides to call off her engagement to a wealthy snob (Thomas Hayden Church) in favor of the vine-swinging hunk with an elephant named Shep (that thinks it's a dog) and an ape named Ape (with a proper Brit voice provided by John Cleese). Filled with slapstick gags and some funny special effects, the movie can be a bit of a trial for adults, but it's a hilarious treat for its intended audience. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars great comedy for all ages   September 4, 2008
Peter Tarique ((Brooklyn, NY United States)
Good-natured, family-oriented comedy about a clumsy ape man who lives in the jungle amongst the animals and never seems able to stop crashing into trees. During a safari, he encounters a beautiful damsel in distress (Mann) and immediately falls in love with her. Despite their differences in lifestyles, he leaves his beloved jungle and travels to the big city where he tries to win her affections and adapt to civilization. It more ways than one this inherently goofy, episodic film resembles an extended television series with zany characters and a predictable setup, but it's smart, funny, and the gags are right on target. Fraser, never more likable, is perfectly cast, aided by a sly narrator and an over-the-top Cleese who really scores as the voice of ape.

5 out of 5 stars By George this movie is fun!   April 21, 2008
Brenda Baker (San Diego, CA United States)
This movie is good, innocent fun for all ages. It has a silly bad guy, an even sillier good guy, and a monkey that talks. Very entertaining and family friendly.

5 out of 5 stars George of the Jungle critique   January 7, 2008
Adrian A. Febles (Puerto Rico)
This is an excellent family film. More so, for those of us who remember the original 1960s cartoon. One of the many ways that this film works is that it has humor for the kids and for the adults.
The morality lessons are also important. The value of friendship and loyalty are the most important messages in the movie.
All in all, a fun film all around.

5 out of 5 stars About the DVD... Widescreen or pan-and-scan?   October 11, 2007

This film is only available in full screen but you are not missing anything because the widescreen version is the same 4:3 picture cropped for 1.77:1. How do I know this? Because I actually invested a lot of money for a rare "widescreen" laserdisc of this film on eBay only to find out that the "widescreen" image was really a cropped version of the (original) 4:3 version. Disney's favourite aspect ratio is 1.66:1, which means that films are filmed in 4:3 and then hard matted down to 1.66:1 for theatrical release and then to 1.77:1 for DVD. It would have been nice to have the added resolution of an "enhanced for widescreen" 1.77:1 DVD since I own a widescreen TV, but at least now I know the film is full screen and NOT pan-and-scan. And this format shows a lot more Brendan Fraser, if you know what I mean...:-)
