A no-brainer that has become a low-brow classic, this 1980 comedy makes anarchy the rule of the day, unleashing the antics of Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, and Chevy Chase. Caddyshack is about the scheme of a vulgar land developer (Dangerfield) who wants to build condominiums on the site of a ritzy country club. Director Harold Ramis (who later reunited with Murray to make Groundhog Day) is content to let the comedy follow a variety of wacky detours, most notably Murray's maniacal war with a gopher that has been digging up the golf course. Dangerfield ultimately steals the show, firing off a battery of one-liners, insults, and tasteless gags. Caddyshack is the kind of movie some people have been known to watch several times a year, reciting every line of dialogue like the followers of a bizarre comedic ritual. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars Ages Pretty Well But Too Bad About the DVD!   January 2, 2009
Frederick Baptist (Singapore)
Few comedies age well as the laugh-quotient of the gags tend to experience severe time decay and so it's nice to watch a comedy that has aged relatively well compared with many that I've seen. This can be attributed to the great collection of comedic talents such as Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Bill Murray and Chevy Chase. Dangerfield is very good in his role as the belligerent slob although not all his one-liners score but quite a few managed to make me laugh still. Ted Knight was the best actor of the lot and his expressions of outrage are priceless. Bill Murray's crusade against the mechanical gopher is also classic comedy while Chevy Chase is his usual funny self.

Unfortunately, this version of the dvd is very, very poor with dreadful picture and sound qualities. Fans of this film should give this particular dvd version as wide a berth as possible and wait for a much, much better picture restored and sound remastered with at least 5.1 surround sound options included in either the standard or Blu-ray formats to surface and to give this particular version a miss.

Still a good comedy but wait for a much better version to be released.

Disc always stops at the same location about 20 minutes into play, I am able to navigate forward to get it playing again but that ruins the movie. Defect discovered months after purchase, I plan to buy another in HD DVD or DVD format.

Of course the movie is great and it was a great price, but the copy I received was a standard edition and not the 20th anniversary edition; I feel cheated.
