Crude, juvenile, and proud of it, Step Brothers stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as two 40-year-old men, both living at home and leading the lives of 13-year-old boys, who are thrown together when their single parents (Mary Steenburgen, Parenthood, and Richard Jenkins, Six Feet Under) get married. Brennan (Ferrell) and Dale (Reilly) start out hating each other as only teenage boys can--but things get even worse for their long-suffering parents when they become best friends. Step Brothers gets most of its mileage from very lowbrow humor, but hidden among the farts and masturbation jokes is the suggestion that while these guys may be emotionally arrested, so are Brennan's hotshot business executive brother (Adam Scott, Tell Me You Love Me) and his high-fiving frat-boy pals, just in a way that's condoned because it makes money. Also crucial is that Ferrell and Reilly capture adolescence in all its gruesome glory--the awkward insecurity but also the egomaniacal, arrogant self-centeredness. Mind you, this isn't the American version of The 400 Blows or anything--one of the movie's setpieces features Brennan tea-bagging Dale's drum set (and if you don't know what tea-bagging is... well, you will after seeing this movie). All in all, Step Brothers combines the adolescent humor of producer Judd Apatow (Superbad, Knocked Up) and the comic chemistry of Ferrell and Reilly (who previously costarred in Talladega Nights)--fans of either will find plenty to enjoy. --Bret Fetzer

This is a Christmas gift for two of my older children. Since they saw it in the movies and loved it, now they have a copy to watch at home.

I bought this product thinking that the digital copy would work with an ipod, right? Wrong!, the digital copy dosent work with macs, itunes, ipods, so its pretty much useless, but you still get charged for it. I was planning on buying pineapple express on dvd, but i might as well download it illegally so i can watch it on my ipod.

Stepbrothers is a moronic, lowbrow, sophmoric (in that is the second movie Ferrell and Riley made me laugh through) attempt at humor.
Fortunately, I am a moron (sometimes), enjoy lowbrow humor (enjoy all humor actually), and was once a sophmore in both college and in high school.
This movie is not going to win any awards, or break any records, but it is going to take one flimsy premise (two step brothers are forced to live together as their parents get married) as far as it can go.
(Spoiler alert) I loved the balls on the drum set routine. And that was a thread they used throughout the movie. I also loved the dog poo licking scene. Dried old white dog poop is funny, I don't care what anyone says. But my favorite scene was the first scene where the two stepbrothers sit down for that first meal. I have had meals of similar hilarity and discomfort before, so I laughed very hard and loud at that scene.
Anyway, to blather less and conclude more, this movie is not for everyone. No movie is. But if you are willing to take this at what it is (lets call it Ricky Bobby lite but slightly less funny) and just enjoy it. If you cant enjoy this, go watch something else.

I am a fan of both actors but this movie is just horrible. Though crude, I wasn't offended by the style of humor. It just wasn't funny at any time. I have seen backyard skits far better than this. I don't know who read the script and thought to themselves "this would be a great movie!" Anyone giving this a positive review knows how bad it is and is playing a joke on unsuspecting customers. There is eather a PR campaign by the studio or a bunch of moronic 14 year olds because this movie is just BAD! Don't get sucked in,this is not even worth a rental. Best stay clear.
Lowbrow comedy done right December 4, 2008

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly re-unite with their Talladega Nights director Adam McKay for Step Brothers; a comedy that revels in its lowbrow style yet still manages to be somewhat charming. Ferrell and Reilly star as Brennan and Dale respectively, two 40-year old men who, much to each other's chigrin, become step brothers when their single parents (Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins) get married. It isn't long before they're at war with each other and driving their parents crazy, and things get even worse when they become best buds. While predictable in its story, Step Brothers relies solely on the comedic talents of Ferrell and Reilly, who once again make a great comedic team. The lowbrow jokes and gags still manage to be pretty funny to boot, and never seem to get tired or lame in their frequency, including some moments that are just laugh out loud. All in all, Step Brothers is lowbrow comedy done right, and if Anchorman and Talladega Nights were up your alley, Step Brothers is definitely for you.
