The fine art of handing out a freeway speeding ticket gets a deviously funny twist in this smart-alecky farce written and performed by the comedy troop Broken Lizard (consisting of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske). These pranksters in patrol cars (led by their long-suffering commander Brian Cox) are little more than overgrown frat boys in a campus rivalry with the brawling Vermont bullies of the local police force, and they know how to have fun on the highway patrol. This skit-like collection of comic moments clumps from one scene to another like a variety show, but the gags are more hit than miss, thanks largely to terrific ensemble work and inspired motorist mind games. With a nod to such 1970s comedies as Animal House and Caddyshack, this "boys in blue just wanna have fun" farce is hardly sophisticated, just clever, raucous fun. --Sean Axmaker

Description
Always looking for action, five over-enthusiastic, but under-stimulated Vermont State Troopers raise hell on the highway, keeping motorists anxiously looking in their rear view mirrors. Between an ongoing feud with the local cops over whose you-know-what is bigger and the state government wanting to shut them down, the Super Troopers find themselves patrolling the boundaries of good taste as they hilariously and unwittingly skid towards solving the crime of their lives.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible!   December 29, 2008
Bibliophile777 (Cincinnati, OH)
This was one of the only movies that I could not make myself finish! Nothing even remotely funny about it! I actually recieved the movie for free but spent money to mail it to someone that I knew wanted it just so I could be rid of it. Best money I ever spent! If you're drunk and/or easily amused you may find a teeny tiny bit of humor in it but even then, you'll have to look pretty hard!

The Bottom Line:

Vastly overrated by many a frat boy, Super Troopers is neither great nor inspired, but it does offer a couple big laughs in between long moments of tedium.

5 out of 5 stars BEST MOVIE   November 25, 2008
Erica N. Hartley (Scottsdale)
If you enjoy ribbing aching humor, this is your movie. Non-stop laughing. I would recommend this to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars There's a reason it's a cult classic   July 27, 2008
Jason Elin (Backwater, Alabama)
Super Trooper is a wacky tale chronicling the happenings of the Highway Patrol as they arrest criminals, battle the local Police Department over jurisdiction, and get into all sorts of shenanigans while pulling pranks on the job.

The clear allure of this movie is that it's filled to the brim with zany antics. It's Dumb and Dumber and Wedding Crashers with badges. From the beginning chase scene with the stoned kids who were littering and, littering and, littering and smoking the reefer, to the various Farva idiosyncrasies that make his character one deserving of a sequel, Super Troopers is without a doubt one of the funniest movies ever made.

Keeping up consistent laughs is the key to a really good comedy, and therein lies the greatness of this movie. Even a toned down scene of serving coffee at the station or eating breakfast at a local diner - there is no way someone could chug that much syrup - is saturated with humor.

Rather than spoiling the various gags with all sorts of detail, it's best to just highly recommend this laugh-riot. For maximum pleasure, I recommend inviting German swingers over, having a pre-movie viewing of Afghanistanimation, serving nothing but liters of cola, and listening to the cat on your lap gently meow.

These Shnozberries taste like shnozberries. I don't need to say anything more meow, do I?
