The Addams Family
Director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black) brings his distinctly cartoonish sensibility to this feature film version of the old Charles Addams comic strip. Anjelica Huston was born to play Morticia Addams, matriarch of the ghoulish Addams clan, while the late Raul Julia is a very agreeable, lusty Gomez. But it's Christina Ricci who arguably steals the show as their stone-faced daughter, Wednesday. As is often the problem with adaptations of comics or television shows, somehow an original story has to be implemented that doesn't clutter things up. But clutter is an issue here as the script gets tangled on a lame plot concerning efforts to steal the Addams' house and fortune. Still, it's fun to see an ideal cast reanimate an old favorite. --Tom Keogh

The Addams Family Values
This somewhat more cohesive follow-up to The Addams Family has the same director, Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black), but a better story line. Joan Cusack plays a busty gold digger who ingratiates herself into the Addams home and convinces Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) that she wants to marry him. Besides Lloyd, the cast includes Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia, ideal as those Brontëan lovers, Morticia and Gomez. But Christina Ricci again walks away with the best moments as the chilly Wednesday Addams, making life miserable for two camp counselors (Peter MacNicol and Christine Baranski) who want her to fit in with other kids.--Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies!   December 20, 2008

I've always been an Addam's Family lover and this is definably a keeper! Both movies in one! Great movie that the whole family will love and laugh about.

4 out of 5 stars Well done, but inappropriate for your Pugsleys and Wednesdays.   December 6, 2008

In the Nashville Tennessean one year, the paper's movie reviewer gave a list of family movies that came out that year and gave a grade. "Beauty and the Beast", the first animated Disney movie to earn a best picture nomination, received an A-. The only movie that topped it, getting an A+ from the reviewer, was "The Addams Family". The reason? There was nobody who could be considered a role model.

These are NOT family movies. I don't believe a PG-13 rated movie can be qualified for it. There is a lot of dark humor, and there is more sexyness in "The Addams Family Values". I would probably not let anyone under 12 watch this even with parental supervision.

It was funny in the second movie to see how the TV series theme popped up, such as Lurch playing it on the organ or an orchestra playing it at a restaurant. And I wasn't prepared for hearing a Christmas carol at the beginning of the first one.

The first movie was much better than the second. If I saw the first one on TV, I might watch some of it. If I saw "Addams Family Values" on TV, I'd change channels.

The first did a better job with dealing with an ensemble. "Family Values" really focused on two stars: Fester and Wednesday. While I loved Wednesday's comments when interviewing nannies, the second movie left a bad taste in my mouth.

That being said, the cast is great. The late Raul Julia was excellent in the role of Gomez. Christopher Lloyd did great as Fester. Christine Rikki stole the show (and maybe the soul as well) as Wednesday. I also like Jimmy Workman as Pugsley.

This was the first of two sitcom families to be revived in PG-13 movies. The second, the Brady Bunch, had no business being made as a PG-13 movie. The Addams family movies were more faithful to the original cartoon, and I don't feel it was inappropriate doing them as PG-13 movies. I just don't feel they're appropriate at all for children.

5 out of 5 stars Still hilarious   November 25, 2008

I loved these movies when they first came out, and they are just as good now. Campy fun! Laughed my butt off. Glad I purchased them in a fit of nostalgia - and very exciting they are on 1 DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic film   November 21, 2008

The Addams family were never funnier. Two movies on one disk! A great addition for any DVD library.

5 out of 5 stars Two shows to watch over and over!   November 11, 2008

I saw both of these movies in the theater, and bought them on VHS. I have no idea why it has taken me this long to replace them on DVD. Having both shows in one is BRILLIANT! It saves shelf space, and
watching one makes you want to watch the other. These movies gave
my entire family great pleasure, especially since we watched at Halloween.
My six year old niece is easliy frightened, so these movies were good
to toughen her for scarier fare. There are some ghoulish elements, but
everything is so funny that they don't seem scary. The casting in these films is flawless. It is a shame Raul Julia passed away before they could make a third film.
