Director John Carpenter and special makeup effects master Rob Bottin teamed up for this 1982 remake of the 1951 science fiction classic The Thing from Another World, and the result is a mixed blessing. It's got moments of highly effective terror and spine-tingling suspense, but it's mostly a showcase for some of the goriest and most horrifically grotesque makeup effects ever created for a movie. With such highlights as a dog that splits open and blossoms into something indescribably gruesome, this is the kind of movie for die-hard horror fans and anyone who slows down to stare at fatal traffic accidents. On those terms, however, it's hard not to be impressed by the movie's wild and wacky freak show. It all begins when scientists at an arctic research station discover an alien spacecraft under the thick ice, and thaw out the alien body found aboard. What they don't know is that the alien can assume any human form, and before long the scientists can't tell who's real and who's a deadly alien threat. Kurt Russell leads the battle against the terrifying intruder, and the supporting cast includes Richard Masur, Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, and Wilford Brimley. They're all playing standard characters who are neglected by the mechanistic screenplay (based on the classic sci-fi story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell), but Carpenter's emphasis is clearly on the gross-out effects and escalating tension. If you've got the stomach for it (and let's face it, there's a big audience for eerie gore), this is a thrill ride you won't want to miss. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A classic in HD   December 17, 2008
Darren Dodson (Hoboken, NJ)
I've watched this so many times in Standard Definition, but it's like watching it again for the first time in HD. The video and sound quality is excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Best Horror Film Ever   December 12, 2008

The Thing (Collector's Edition)

An incredible film that shows that real characters and in credible practical effects make a horror film work rather than gore and CGI

...I think it looks like!!!

Until now, this is the best piece of work, Carpenter directed. Dark, rough and absolutely claustrophobic. Some of the SFX look kind of cheesy, but don't forget: The movie is over 20 years old...

I luv it ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Don't take Anything with you   November 28, 2008
J. R. Lines (Moab Ut)
When I first saw this movie,it was a sneak preview with the premiere of Blade Runner, another Sci-Fi classic.I had gone to the movie alone, with my friend "Laughing Sam's Dice"...ok?Anyway,I was just melting into my seat in total connection with the first feature, and in all honesty partway into The Thing, for the first time in my movie career,I walked out,sat in the parking lot trying to compose myself to drive home.I have to consider this like an award level!Present day movie-goer's would consider it differently, the perspective I dealt with was beyond anything that had been released.Anyway,I had to go back, this time,I took my friend Mary Jane, and had a slightly calmer experience that I was able to enjoy to the end without entrails turning into tentacles leaving the screen, and crawling up the aisles, and enveloping the audience..... yeah like that, trust me,you didn't want to be there!Today it's a cult classic in the household, usually involves a nostalgic discussion of the details of my first experience.Have you ever been experienced?Well I was.

4 out of 5 stars A Remake That's Almost Better Than The Original   November 25, 2008
Silky Greensleeves
In 1982 John Carpenter remade one of the all time great, Sci-fi/Horror films"The Thing".This remake was in many ways scarier than the original, due to the way the creature could shape itself perfectly, like it's victim.A lot of paranoia, and A scary sense of not knowing true identity, also made this film scarier than the original. It has some great special effects, and A wonderful ensemble cast including Kurt Russell,Wilfred Brimley,Keith David,Richard Dysart, and David Clennon. What keeps this film from being 5 stars,is the film has more gore, than heart. That Being said ,it may not be as good as the original, but it's still very entertaining, and quite exciting. I highly recommend this to fans of horror/sci-fi films, and fans of Kurt Russell, and or John Carpenter.
