Amazon.com The films of Tim Burton shine through the muck like a jack-o-lantern on a foggy October night. After such successes as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, it should come as no surprise that Sleepy Hollow is a dazzling film, a delicious reworking of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Dark and moody, the film is a thrilling ride back to the turn of the 19th century. Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a seemingly hapless constable from New York City who is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of the decapitations that are plaguing the town. Crane is a bumbling sort, with a tremendous faith in science over mysticism, and he comes up against town secrets, bewitching women, and a number of bodies missing heads. Christina Ricci, as beautiful as ever, is Katrina Van Tassel, the offbeat love interest who alternately charms and frightens Crane.
The film, while occasionally gory (as one should expect from a movie about a headless horseman), is not terribly frightening, although it is suspenseful. Both Depp and Ricci are convincing, and the art direction and production values give the village its harsh feel. Toward the end, once the secrets are revealed, the film does slow down; however, this stylistic horror film provides many tricks and even more treats. --Jenny Brown

A VISUAL PHANTASMAGORIA January 7, 2009 Geary A., Jones In, what has become one of my favorite films, Tim Burton served up an extraordinarily vibrant retelling of the Washington Irving classic, with rich baroque siennas, umbers, and golds jumping out of the mists of a secretive little burrough, where a number of bodies begin to show up missing their thinking caps. Enter a constable ( wonderfully portrayed by Johnny Depp ), out of favor with his superiors, given to vapors, and scientific methods that appeal not at all to the puritanical powers that be. With the aid of a local beauty ( winsomely played by Christina Ricci ) of mysterious bent, and a young lad related to one of the headless, our gallant policeman puts aside his fear of large bugs, and searches for a human devil... Bottom line: there are plenty of extras in this particular version, and it's well worth the bread.
Great Movie, HORRIBLE Blu Ray Transfer December 24, 2008 Will Morton (NY, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
So far, this is the worst quality Blu Ray disc I have seen, which is a shame because this is such a visually stunning film. The Blu Ray is extremely grainy and details in many shots almost seem to have a smudged look. Paramount should recall these discs and tranfer the film over again. Don't buy this Blu Ray.
Great Movie, poor Blu ray transfer December 6, 2008 Reed Pitkunigis (New Jersey, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is easily my favorite Tim Burton movie but I must admit that the Blu ray transfer looks horrible. The faces are so grainy it makes it tough to watch. I put my regular DVD of this movie into my sony Blu ray and had it up coverted and it looked better than the Blu ray. Back to the drawing board guys !
Perfect Halloween Movie November 11, 2008 Susan Kraner (Dayton, OH) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My sister and I love Halloween, and this movie is a perfect one to watch to get in the appropriate spirit. In addition to fine acting, the special effects and artistic rendition of Sleepy Hollow is classic Tim Burton. Fabulous!
Great Blu-ray Experience October 30, 2008 Jason A Ludlum 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Anyone who knows the name Tim Burton doesn't have to be told that you can't go wrong with any of his flicks. Burton's films were born to be seen on blu-ray, and Sleepy Hollow is no exception. I am new to the blu-ray world and this was my first blu-ray at home. Having seen this movie a few times before, I was not forseeing any real surprises. As for the actual story and such, I knew what to expect. It was the clarity that surprised me. The little things in the background. The scenery. All gorgeous...Now, for my movie review......"It Rocks!!"
