Amazon.com What happens when a young boy named Tom, apprenticed as a chimney sweep, gets framed for theft in 1850s England? Even though a young girl named Ellie knows the real thieves' identities and tries to clear Tom's name, Tom's desperate escape run lands him right in the middle of Dead Man's Pool. Assumed to have met certain death, Tom gets sucked into a magical underwater world. Tom befriends the creatures he meets beneath the sea, and they accompany him on a journey to the land of Water Babies, where he intends to ask the all-powerful Cracken to help him return to the world above the water. Tom encounters many difficulties along the way, but he eventually arrives in the world of the Water Babies, only to watch an evil shark and eel capture his new friends. Cracken forces Tom to choose between his own return to the world and the freedom of the Water Babies. Tom wisely chooses the Water Babies' freedom, winning his own return in the process. Life is far from idyllic when Tom returns to land, but eventually the quick-thinking boy clears his name, traps the real thieves, and wins a place in Ellie's affluent family. Many adults possess fond memories of seeing this 1978 movie as children. The land portions of this 85-minute musical feature live-action footage, while the water sequence is fully animated. To a fresh, modern audience, the abrupt change from one format to the other is somewhat disconcerting, as is the choppy, older animation style. The story, based on the classic children's book of the same name by Charles Kingsley, is an intriguing look at both Victorian culture and the fantasy world. (Ages 4-8) --Tami Horiuchi

This "Classic" Book to Movie Holds Up November 25, 2008 James vanMaanen (Queens, NY) I loved this story so much when I was a very young boy, that when the movie came out late-70s, I took my 4 year-old daughter to see it. She loved it, and now I've bought a copy to give to my granddaughter. Watching it again was a delight. For the down-the-chimney-and-into-the-little-girl's-room scene alone, I'd watch the film all over again. The songs are adorable, and the seahorse just may be the first animated "gay" character is movies. Lionel Jeffries ("The Railway Children," "The Amazing Mr. Blunden") is an actor who also managed to direct some lovely children's films that adults can enjoy equally well. Try this one and see for yourself.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! July 18, 2008 nik (Sydney, Australia) I saw this on tv when I was about 6 and the whole `switching worlds when you go underwater' thing always stuck with me, but I never remembered the name. For the last 17 years, whenever I was flicking through channels, at the back of my mind there was always a hope that I would stumble upon it again. THANKYOU AMAZON, now my life is complete.
Blast from the Past April 4, 2007 J. Malone (The Garden State, USA) I remember watching this movie on HBO when it was a brand new network. Remember the miniature town they built and the camera panning through it?... Anyway, this movie is cute is a weird psychadelic way. Love the tunes!
DVD purchase, Waterbabies January 13, 2007 J. Peter Magnusson (Stockholm, Sweden) This is a movie i've been looking for since i was about 7 or 8 years old. I saw it when i was just a little boy and now i found it again, of course i had to buy it. Since the perspective of a 8 year old and myself (30 years old) is slitghtly different, i wasn't as "great" as i remebered it to be but im still satisfied with my purchase. So to round it up, if you have kids at 5 to 7 years old, im pretty sure they would like this movie. Since it's kind of old you have to understand that the best thing about this movie is the story, not the graphic though it is alright.
Not worth the money April 25, 2006 A. Glunt (South Korea) 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
I saw this movie as a child and loved it, then again who doesn't love under water adventure? I thought that my children would be thrilled to see one of the movies I grew up with, HA! They got up and left the room to go play. The animation was awful; it's nothing like the bright cute colors on the DVD case. The stupid songs are now stuck in my head. All I can say it thank God for Disney. They never had bad stuff like this. I didn't even want to leave a star. It's BIG FAT 0 in my book, I gave it away to the Library.
