Amazon.com A reindeer doesn't have to fly to be magical to someone, and Prancer succeeds, in its unassuming and plainspoken way, to prove that point. This 1989 family film stars Rebecca Harrell as 9-year-old Jessica, a motherless schoolgirl raised (and largely ignored) by her bereaved and embittered father (Sam Elliot), an apple farmer. While Jessica's dad struggles to keep food on the family table, the little heroine worries over the fate of a wounded reindeer she meets and wistfully identifies as a member of Santa's sled crew. The story may sound overly precious, but the film is grittier and more realistic than that. Far more concerned with wobbly family relationships than gilded escapism, Prancer is a rare family film that can entertain without invoking fluffy enchantment. Followed 12 years later by a sequel, Prancer Returns. --Tom Keogh
Product Description Jessica the daughter of an impoverished apple farmer still believes in santa claus. So when she comes across a reindeer with an injured leg it makes perfect sense to her to assume that it is prancer who had fallen from a christmas display in town. a little intense for smaller kids December 28, 2008 S. Cagley (Maple Grove, MN) I bought this for my 4 and 7 year olds. Sam Elliot's character is pretty mean (in the kid's eyes) and I feel, too intense for smaller children to enjoy.
WHAT A WONDERFUL MOVIE, MY FAVORITE December 23, 2008 Brenda L. Henson (CHINA TWP. MI) I REMEMBER ONE YEAR PRANCER WAS NOT ON TV OR I MISSED IT. WELL I WON'T MISS IT AGAIN. I BOUGHT IT SO I DON'T. I WISHED I WAS THAT LITTLE GIRL, TO HAVE A CONNECTION WITH A REINDEER. I CRY EVERYTIME AT THE END. I JUST LOVE THIS MOVIE. A TRUE HOLIDAY SPECIAL. BELIEVE ME.
First 5 minutes, "There is no Santa, no God, and no heaven" December 4, 2008 Ms. Gail 3 out of 13 found this review helpful
Ignore the other reviews. My kids, 7 and 4 watched this video in our car dvd player. They became very upset when, in the first several minutes of the movie, one child explains to another child: 1. There is NO Santa Clause 2. How could Santa go down all the chimney's in the world in 1 night, it's not logical 3. There also is NO GOD 4. And NO HEAVEN This becomes especially upsetting in the movie because the child who is being told this, sadly exclaims, "this(no heaven)can't be true because what about my mom?" (Her mom is dead and the child had previously thought her mom was in Heaven.) This sad, upset child then tells the other child, "You are not my friend anymore." At this point, I ejected the movie from the DVD player. My kids were bewildered and upset. Avoid this movie if you have young kids - they will be confused, upset, and it will make you sad too.
Prancer May 29, 2008 Barbara Shores (Birmingham, AL USA) Anything starring Sam Elliot has to be good. lol. It was a lovely movie for Christmas especially.
Made in Michigan January 13, 2008 C. Kortz (Beverly Hills, MI USA) Another Christmas classic. Down to earth and touching performances by Sam Elliott and ensamble. We watch it every year.
