Amazon.com Otis Redding's career was just taking off when he was killed in a plane crash. This DVD combines footage of Otis from Monterey Pop with black-and-white video from the Stax/Volt European tour earlier that same year. In both cases, his backup band is Booker T and the MG's (with the Mar-Keys). The European gig features Sam and Dave, as well as Booker T and the MG's doing their big hit, "Green Onions". Monterey Pop was, of course, the first big rock & roll rave-up, and it's there that Otis and the band really cut loose. The piece is short (48 minutes) and repeats a few numbers--at both concerts, Otis was sharing the bill and only had time to do his hits. His biggest hit, "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" (which was written after Monterey and recorded only three days before Otis died) is here only as a fragment over a photo montage. Nevertheless, you can see why the man and his music still live on--it's the passion, particularly with "Try a Little Tenderness" from Stax/Volt and "I've Been Loving You" from Monterey Pop. --Geof Miller
Description The Monterey Pop Festival was the first in the series of major festivals that ran through the 60's and early 70's. At the time Otis Redding was a performer primarily known in the black community. His performance at the Monterey Pop Festival put him in front of a young, white audience that galvanized his record sales and propelled him to stardom in the pop market. This Otis Redding program has been created from performances at The Monterey Pop Festival as well as the legendary European Stax-Volt tour of the middle 60's. Featuring an intoduction by Tommy Smothers. Songs include: Shake, My Girl, Green Onions, Something Is Wrong, Hold On, I'm Coming, Satisfaction, Try A Little Tenderness, Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay, Respect, and I've Been Loving You.

Not the best but I'll take it. April 12, 2008 Mark French (Honolulu, Hawaii) Old (or vintage) black and white video with poor quality but still one for the library. Another example of hard to find concerts from this time period. Very few great video and/or audio quality live performance out there. Hey, but it's Otis, you gotta have it.
Simply the Best! October 29, 2007 Aloma A. Shaw (Washington, DC) The DVD is absolutely wonderful. The interview with Otis' wife was great. It gave a personal account of his life. I also enjoyed the interview with Otis. I don't think I've ever heard him talk! Thank you for such a quality documentary of a very talented man. This DVD is a must have.
Thoroughly satisfying September 6, 2007 William Cole (Oakland, CA United States) This is the best video of Otis Redding available. It has his Monterey appearance as well as clips of his legendary European tour. Also great footage of Sam and Dave during the Paris concert. But much more important to me personally, it is absolutely essential for any Booker T and the MGs fan. The band is unbelievably tight and is the driving force behind all of the Stax vocalists. They steal the show. The best little band there ever was. Thoroughly satisfying.
