5 out of 5 stars REGARDNG NEW DVD SET OF SEASONS 1, 2, 3, OF ROSWELL   August 20, 2008
Patrick E. Perret (New Orleans, LA ( U.S.A.))
I like this series and this new packaging does not change a thing accept it cheaper. I paid 19.99 per set when it was first released compared to the original at thirty something dollars per set. Who cares what is on the outside of the box when everything else is the same. Great show I hope you enjoy it as much as me.

*NOTE ON EDITION*
I like that this series is being re-released on DVD with a new look, but I think it's absolutely preposterous that Fox is trying to make it look like Katherine Heigl was the star of the show. It's disrespectful to the rest of the cast, to the writers, and even to Katherine Heigl fans, because even the producers said that she was the *least* developed of all the main characters. This season of Roswell gets a 6/10, but this edition gets a 1/10.

It took me a long, long time to watch the entire first season of Roswell. Nearly two months. Seasons of Buffy, Angel, Veronica Mars, etc. take about a week or two. So needless to say, Roswell started slow. It was a solid story with interesting episodes and (a few) great characters, but it was never enthralling until the end. The final disc of the first season set will engross you, but it's the first three that will leave you trudging along slowly, waiting for something exciting to happen.

Positives
+ William Saddler is outstanding as Sheriff Valenti
+ Maria, Alex, Isabel, Kyle, and--to an extent--Michael are played by competent actors who truly fit the character they play. They add a certain depth and significance to the character that may or may not have been given by the writers
+ Julie Benz, Buffy/Angel vet, guest stars as Mrs. Topolsky
+ Some of the story arcs, specifically Tess and Nasedo's, are well developed and make for a highly entertaining watch
+ The subtle friends-or-more? relationship between Alex and Isabel is the most downplayed, yet the most interesting. Sometimes leaving things to the imagination is best
+ The season finale is phenomenal
+ Sheriff Valenti is played up to be the Main Villain of the series early on, but the revelation of the true "Big Bad" in the last few episodes is very interesting
+ Visuals are a big plus

Negatives
+ While Jason Behr was an acceptable guest star in other television shows, he doesn't seem to be up to playing a main character. The same goes for Shiri Appleby, who stars as Liz. Their romance seems forced (with the exception of the strangely on-point finale) and each of their characters seem awkwardly played.
+ The plot drags from the beginning to middle of the season.
+ Sometimes the motivation of certain characters aren't clear
+ Often, the interaction between characters is awkward and clunky
+ Slow

Though not all of the cast is perfect and the arcs aren't carried out as good as they could have been, the debut season of Roswell is an enjoyable watch. By the end of the twenty-second episodes, all of the characters have a little place in your heart.

6/10

This is just another way for Fox to suck money from consumers. There is nothing new with these sets, but the package art. Katharine Heigl was not the star of Roswell as this new cover art makes it seem. I feel offense on behalf of the other actors on the show. This is just a way to sucker "Grey's Anatomy" fans into buying this.

If Fox wanted to spend money on something, they should have shelled out the money to restore the original music to the show.
