3 out of 5 stars Addictive in its simplicity...3.5 stars   July 31, 2008
Chumm (a face in Dr. Lao's Circus)
In addition to the TOMIE movies being a translation of a comic book character into film they also offer up mildly interesting reflections on contemporary Japanese life which involve teenage angst, the dating game, parent-child relationships and respecting one's elders.

Of course the main mystery which pervades everything is 'TOMIE'. Part ghost, part demon, these movies present the viewer with a variety of impressions and revelations into her (or IT's) purpose, nature, powers, and genesis. Who or what exactly is TOMIE?

This is all part of the deranged charm featured in this 'TOMIE Collection'. With 5 movies and over 7 hours exploring the same theme (and basically the same movie), there is the obvious claim of repetition and redundancy to be made.
Yet each movie tells the "story" slightly askance, offering up tidbits into TOMIE's mystique. Wether examined as celluloid exposition on obsession, possession, infatuation, or sexuality, TOMIE sometimes can become much more (lust, revenge, murder, EVIL, for example) depending on what the viewer wants to see. This is not the most sophisticated or respected j-horror around, it is no 'Ju-on' or 'Ringu'. There's alot of wiggle-room to induge in.

Indulgence can be fun. TOMIE is certainly a diversion to all those mega-million over-hyped blockbusters. And yes, in its own twisted way TOMIE is addictive. Of the 5 "movies" in this set:

1) TOMIE **1/2...might as well begin here though truely the order does'nt really matter. The pace here is plodding but you'll get the gist of the series here. All the others (except 'Another Face') are better though if you call it quits here I'd understand. Establishes your basic TOMIE factoids (or TOMIE-isms).

2) REPLAY ***1/2...refreshing improvement on (1). Lots of cool TOMIE-isms.

3) ANOTHER FACE *...not really a movie per se. Contains three tales seemingly made for TV on a VERY low budget. Actually seems like a halloween episode of the U.S. TV sitcom 'Saved By the Bell', or a pre-teen After School Special. Though it presents a few TOMIE "factoids" this one really dings this collection.

4) RE-BIRTH ***...along the lines of (2) and revealing TOMIE-isms in about as complex a fashion as you're gonna see. Some very weird moments.

5) FORBIDDEN FRUIT ***1/2...the bi-sexuality of the demon/ghost TOMIE, is nothing sacred? A decent wrap-up for this collection. Comfortably weird.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall 'TOMIE:The Collection' conjurs up an interesting nemesis that not only CAN NOT DIE but can possess, drive crazy, multiply, or ensorcell. Don't expect too much and just go with the flow. These movies contain their own geeky sense of j-horror.

5 out of 5 stars Tomie... the girl who never dies!   May 16, 2008
Roberta Wright (Benton, AR.)
These movies are great! This is about a girl named Tomie. She will never die. She never dies.

5 out of 5 stars Much bang for your BUCK!   November 28, 2007
Krystal Carr (Racine, Wisconsin USA)
These movies are all excelent! 5 for about, 3.95 NEW! I bought this collection without much knowledge of Tomie and I really do love these movies! They're all great. I highly doubt you'll be dissapointed.
The first movie is, Tomie. Second, which was super low budget and didn't have much to do with the story line was Tomie: Another Face. The third movie, which was one of the best in my opinion was Tomie: Replay. 4th, which was long and neverending...is Tomie: Rebirth and 5th, my most favorite out of the 5, is Tomie: Forbidden Fruit.
You can easily rent these movies from hollywood video if you have one, but i'd suggest buying the collection. Since, the price is cheap. The movies are cheap separate, but come on. BUY IT!
If you like tomie movies, there's a few new out that weren't added to the collection, Tomie - Revenge & Tomie - Beginning

4 out of 5 stars A great buy for Tomie fans!   July 5, 2007

What can I say, I saw the first Tomie film (in a lousy Hong Kong pressing) and loved it. Then I watched a simiar edition of Tomie: Forbidden Fruit and I was hooked. Seeing the Tomie Collection in Best Buy, it was a no brainer. Five films, nicely mastered with bonus features at this price? Sign me up!

This box includes the best of the Tomie films, there are two later ones not included here.

I actually watched 3 of these movies over the weekend. the original was pretty crazy and i didn't quite get what this was all about until i saw the 2nd movie (replay) and then it made more sense..I actually liked the 3rd one (rebirth) more..there is another one that looks like some kind of t.v. movie, which i didn't want to see, but the last one from 2005 called forbidden fruit looks pretty good and will be watching that one this weekend...it just so happens all 5 are at my local video store along with some better jhorror and khorror movies (such as one missed call and face)
