Amazon.com essential video Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

The ultimate buddy movie... December 4, 2008 Bucky (Massachusetts, USA) Quite simply, Lonesome Dove (1989) is one of the best westerns of all time. Even the minor characters are multi-dimensional and fully developed. All of the acting is top notch. The direction is superb. But, this story is really about the relationship of two men: Captain Woodward Call (Tommy Lee Jones) and Captain Augustus McRae (Robert Duvall), retired Texas Rangers. Call, the stoic, is the polar opposite of McRae, a fun-loving "philosopher." Their poignant farewell is one of the most touching you will ever see on film. (Duvall said this was his favorite role.) I rank this film right up there with The Searchers (1956) starring John Wayne.
lonesome dove November 17, 2008 David D. Jones (Wilder Idaho) One of the greatest movie series ever made. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones are master of their trade.
WOW!!! One of the GREATEST WESTERNS EVER MADE now in HD 5.1 Blu-ray WIDESCREEN Home Theater (w/HDMI) (explained) October 27, 2008 forrie lowell 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Experiencing this 6 plus hour TV (4:3 ratio) Western mini series in 1989 was an amazing experience. LONESOME DOVE was considered by many to be the "Greatest Western ever made". Now for the first time ever we can re-experience this classic better than ever. NOW "LONESOME DOVE" 2 Disc Blu-ray Collector's Edition has been Digitally Remastered in WIDESCREEN 5.1 Surround Sound. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! For your HD Home Theater w/HDMI 5.1 Sound explodes off the screen with this epic classic as you have never seen before. Amazing!!! My qualifying statement: My HD Home Theater weighs in at about $2000 plus movies. A break down is; a Mitsubishi HD Projector (HC-1500) $800 (orig $1495), A Sony Blu-ray 5.1 Sound System $399 (orig $499) and a Sony PLAYSTATION 3 w/Blu-ray player $399 (orig $499). Sony HDMI cables $150 and a HD Screen Paint and Kit $180 for my 108" viewing wall screen. With this 1080p system I've created a HD Home Theater presentation sight and sound equal to an IMAX (on a smaller scale) experience. This 1080p w/5.1 sound Widescreen showing of "LONESOME DOVE" blows your mind eye, period. Seeing this Classic Western on the Big HD HOME THEATER SCREEN brings you to the full appreciation on the American West. Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones and cast are now even bigger and better than ever. I guarantee you'll be watching this one many times. You must have this for your Western Classic Film library, today. Enjoy.

On the DVD box and on the cover, it was clearly marked "English subtitle" as a feature. So we bought this DVD as a gift to a hearing impaired person. There was no subtitle. We were really disappointed.
