Product Description Six people dead. One of them a cop. But theres more to the grim discovery at the nite owl cafe than a murder case. Three of the los angeles police departments finest uncover a scandal that goes to the heart of the sun-soaked paradise thats 50s los angeles. Amazon.com essential video In a time when it seems that every other movie makes some claim to being a film noir, L.A. Confidential is the real thing--a gritty, sordid tale of sex, scandal, betrayal, and corruption of all sorts (police, political, press--and, of course, very personal) in 1940s Hollywood. The Oscar-winning screenplay is actually based on several titles in James Ellroy's series of chronological thriller novels (including the title volume, The Big Nowhere, and White Jazz)--a compelling blend of L.A. history and pulp fiction that has earned it comparisons to the greatest of all Technicolor noir films, Chinatown. Kim Basinger richly deserved her Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a conflicted femme fatale; unfortunately, her male costars are so uniformly fine that they may have canceled each other out with the Academy voters: Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce, Kevin Spacey, and James Cromwell play LAPD officers of varying stripes. Pearce's character is a particularly intriguing study in Hollywood amorality and ambition, a strait-laced "hero" (and son of a departmental legend) whose career goals outweigh all other moral, ethical, and legal considerations. If he's a good guy, it's only because he sees it as the quickest route to a promotion. --Jim Emerson

Blue Ray but not 1081 November 10, 2008 W. J. Smith-bowers (London UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
this blue ray is not what you would expect of a HD imahe because its 480 image and not 1081 image - this is a pity for a great film.
Great movie!!! November 5, 2008 Shawn C. Morrison I seen this movie years ago and I still lovr it. The Blu-Ray did an excellent job cleaning it up.
Great Movie in HD October 29, 2008 Ryan E. Wool (NYC, NY) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
LA Confidential is a great movie. The performances by all of the characters are superb and the movie looks beautiful in HD. Not too many special effects to warrant bluray but I own it because its still worth it.
It's actually better! October 27, 2008 Dijon (Brooklyn Center, MN USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of my favorite films and it looks great in HD. All the features of the original DVD are included. The movie itself just gets better every time I see it and I catch details I missed on previous viewings. The way this film creates the atmosphere of the 1950s is amazing and what a terrific cast. It easily could have won the Best Picture Oscar. I highly recommend it.
