Amazon.com The films of Tim Burton shine through the muck like a jack-o-lantern on a foggy October night. After such successes as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, it should come as no surprise that Sleepy Hollow is a dazzling film, a delicious reworking of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Dark and moody, the film is a thrilling ride back to the turn of the 19th century. Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, a seemingly hapless constable from New York City who is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to solve the mystery of the decapitations that are plaguing the town. Crane is a bumbling sort, with a tremendous faith in science over mysticism, and he comes up against town secrets, bewitching women, and a number of bodies missing heads. Christina Ricci, as beautiful as ever, is Katrina Van Tassel, the offbeat love interest who alternately charms and frightens Crane.
The film, while occasionally gory (as one should expect from a movie about a headless horseman), is not terribly frightening, although it is suspenseful. Both Depp and Ricci are convincing, and the art direction and production values give the village its harsh feel. Toward the end, once the secrets are revealed, the film does slow down; however, this stylistic horror film provides many tricks and even more treats. --Jenny Brown

Perfect Halloween Movie November 11, 2008 Susan Kraner (Dayton, OH) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My sister and I love Halloween, and this movie is a perfect one to watch to get in the appropriate spirit. In addition to fine acting, the special effects and artistic rendition of Sleepy Hollow is classic Tim Burton. Fabulous!
Great Blu-ray Experience October 30, 2008 Jason A Ludlum 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Anyone who knows the name Tim Burton doesn't have to be told that you can't go wrong with any of his flicks. Burton's films were born to be seen on blu-ray, and Sleepy Hollow is no exception. I am new to the blu-ray world and this was my first blu-ray at home. Having seen this movie a few times before, I was not forseeing any real surprises. As for the actual story and such, I knew what to expect. It was the clarity that surprised me. The little things in the background. The scenery. All gorgeous...Now, for my movie review......"It Rocks!!"
One of Tim Burton's most visually striking films October 29, 2008 Monkdude (Hampton, VA) Sleepy Hollow is just a great looking movie that deserves a DVD play at least once a year in October. This is one of the ultimate Halloween movies. It features spooky sets, one of Danny Elfman's best music scores, enough gore to make Sweeney Todd proud and the visual touches of Tim Burton. The acting is good all around, with no one standing out from the crowd. I like Johnny Depp in this, but it's not one of his best performances. As a whole, Sleepy Hollow is my favorite flick from this director and it has been since I first saw it in theaters back in 1999.
Not scary, but creepy October 20, 2008 Eric S. Kim (Southern California) This isn't a "jump" horror film. It's considered a horror film for its general eerieness and beautifully creepy images. It's also a horror film for the many decapitations that are found in this film, so if you have a weak stomach, you've been warned. Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci give out brilliant performances for the younger crowd, while Michael Gambon and Miranda Richardson will grab the attention of the older crowd. Christopher Walken is absolutely freaky as the Hessian [headless] horseman, while Christopher Lee's small role is a treat. Casper Van Dien, Ian McDiarmand, Jeffrey Jones, and Michael Gough are an excellent supporting cast. Tim Burton's imagination has been put to good use once again: sets and costumes are truly gothic and beautiful to look at. Andrew Kevin Walker's screenplay could've improved a bit with more polish and sheen, but it's only a minor flaw. Danny Elfman strikes again with his unique musical style (the main theme will have people shivering). So if you're a Burton or Elfman or Depp or Ricci or Walken fan, then this is the film for you. A-
Heads will roll October 12, 2008 Brett Johnson (IL, USA) This is a great movie, and it doesn't dissapoint on blu ray. Tim Burton's cinematography is superb as usual, and Depp and Ricci do excellent jobs, as do the entire cast. This must have been a blast to work on this movie with all the talent involved. Buy it and watch it again for Halloween.
