Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
As the fourth season of Angel starts, everything is still as we left it: Angel has been sunk to the bottom of the sea in an iron box by his inexplicable and vindictive son Connor and Cordelia has been summoned to higher realms to await orders. Gunn and Fred are left in the Hyperion Hotel, unsure about what has happened to their friends, and Lilah is working hard to seduce Wesley to the dark side. In the first few episodes, some of this is resolved but it's almost immediately replaced by far worse crises: prophesies of doom accumulate more rapidly even than usual in this wonderfully gloomy show and a horned rock-like beast rains fire on Los Angeles. This last year is Angel's most tightly dramatic season yet--with a story arc of surprising intensity punctuated by the show's usual wit and sexiness.

Season 4 is presented on DVD in Dolby 2.0 Surround Sound and anamorphic widescreen. It comes with insightful, and often hilarious, commentaries on seven of the 22 episodes as well as featurettes--a series overview, profiles of the characters of Jasmine and the Beast, a farewell to the Hyperion Hotel (the characters' base for three seasons), and a discussion of the apocalypse that Angel has to deal with from episode 7 onwards). --Roz Kaveney

Product Description
Season 4 of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spinoff and the second to last season of this detective comedy cum soap opera featuring Buffy's ex-boyfriend as the title role. David Borneanaz plays a brooding vampire beset with guilt who has come to L.A. to atone for two and a half centuries spent killing innocents. With a few close and good-looking friends he opens up Angel Investigations and becomes a vigilante determined to fight the forces of evil which run rampant in the city streets. Season 4 opens with Angel being held captive at the bottom of the ocean by a secretly mutinous Connor while Cordelia has been called to a higher plane by the Powers That Be. After everyone has been reunited within a few episodes a new villain is unleashed: The Beast with whom Angel's alter ego the evil vampire Angelus used to be in cahoots has returned from exile to terrorize L.A. Angel is severed from his "good" side by his friends in order to pump his "bad" side for information about this new nemesis and while Angelus escapes to wreak havoc alongside his old demon friend uber-villain Jasmine arrives to throw the themes of the show into a cosmic light.System Requirements:Running Time 990 Mins.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 024543233565 Manufacturer No: 2233356

1 out of 5 stars This is the worst season of any show I've ever managed to finish, and that's not an exaggeration   April 1, 2008

I got into Angel as a Buffy fan, I imagine that's true of most people. I watched seasons 1-3 and liked them well enough to buy and start season 4.

The problem is, season 4 is terrible. Its all about Connor and Angel, probably the 2 weakest characters and definately the weakest relationship in either series. Darla is gone. Cordelia is gone. Lorne and Gunn play increased rolls, badly. Wesley is alienated from the others, minimizing the strongest character on the show. Every single episode for an entire season is just Angel and Connor fighting, and everyone else being pissed at Wesley. I know that sounds impossible, but its true

The whole thing, from start to finish, is a disaster. The only reason I finished it, and I mean ONLY, was that my brother made it through and said season 5 was a million times better, which is is. Even with that encouragement it took me several months to make it through this set. By comparison, I finished seasons 1-3 in less than a month, combined

Honestly, unless you're the biggest Angel fan around, there is absolutely no reason to watch season 4 of this show. Its like the worst episode of any other season, stretched out to be a whole season long. If I had not already invested 10 seasons worth of watching, between Buffy and Angel, and if I hadn't foolishly bought Season 4 before I realized how terrible it was, I never would have finished it

This season alone is enough reason to stay away from the entire series. Unlike Buffy, where seasons 2-4 are the best and the first half of 5 is ok, then the 2nd half of 6 and all of 7 are terrible, with Angel, the first season is rocky, 2 and 3 are ok, 4 is beyond bad, and 5 is great. And its just not worth wading through all that to get to the great part at the end. With Buffy you get the good right up front and that's easier to justify, but I would honestly reccomend that no one even bother with the entire series Angel, because season 4 is so incredibly awful.

Joss basically admits it himself because season 5 has absolutely no Connor in it, and next to no Lorne in it. Plus they bring Spike and throw out the idea that Angel can't be happy or he turns evil, revamp Fred's character, bring back the best bad guy the show ever had, etc

All the is Joss's way of saying "yeah, i know it was terrible, please forgive me" about the previous season. He did the exact same thing in Buffy, trying to bribe you into forgetting about season 6 by completely changing everything in season 7, bringing Giles and Faith back, etc. In both cases it was too little, too late

Anyway, I know this is a little disjointed as reviews go, but the bottom line is that you should avoid this at absolutely all costs. If you just absolutely love Angel, skip this season and go straight to season 5. I promise you it will hardly even matter, there's next to no reference to the events of season 4 during season 5 anyway

2 out of 5 stars Typical Joss - he ruins a once great show   March 31, 2008

Although a once hard-core BtVS / AtS fan, I gave up on Buffy in Season 6 and Angel in Season 4. Typical Joss Whedon - he makes great characters and then can't resist ruining them by introducing more and more plot contrivances and less and less subtlety, in what I assume is an ongoing effort to one-up himself.

This season of Angel, though well-written and well-acted, takes the downward turn in plot that started in Season 3 (Connor, the Cordy ascension, the icky and ham-fisted Cordy/Angel 'romance'), and plunges even further into utter crap. The entire Cordy storyline is out of left field and a real character assassination, and the 'Big Bad' of the season is ridiculous and more annoying even than Holtz.

Honestly, I guess this season is worth a watch if you're a fan of the show, but it certainly isn't worth buying.

Bought this DVD for my girlfriend for Christmas as a surprise (also bought her Season Three) and she was thrilled to receive it. If you like the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series or the Angel series then you will love this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars angel season 4   January 10, 2008
This is one of the best seasons of the show. It was clever and to the point. I loved "jasmine" as a woman of color, a very beautiful woman of color and the idea of Angel being a grandfather. If you love the Angel world and the people that live there you are sure to want to add this to your collection. I can't think of which ep. is my favorite, i would have to say the ones with Faith... yes the rouge slayer is back and better than ever. And there is a visit from Willow and those are always fun. Great season!!!!! Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Fatal Beauty and the Beast-Angel's Fourth Season   August 18, 2007

Well, here it is! The most hated and controversial season of Angel's short lived 5 year run. Some fans say it's has too many flaws, some fans hate it for ruining Cordelia as a character, some hate it for Connor and his almost incest-like relationship with Cordelia, some fans think the Jasmine storyline was the worst idea ever, most just hate it for all those reasons. But me, I think this by far Angel's best season to date! It was not only darkest year, but it brought the show to new heights with its epic and apocalyptic episodes. It made all the events of the last 2 seasons make sense and almost every episode ended with a shock, twist or cliffhanger. There were impressive big bads like The Beast, amazing returns from Angelus, Faith and even Willow! Here's Season 4:

Deep Down-Great episode!! "With Angel and Cordelia still missing, Gunn and Fred have been looking after Connor unaware of what he did to Angel, while Wesley turns to Justine find Angel." This was a strong opener with great scenes like Wesley saving Angel and Angel confronting Connor. Cordelia is a higher being.

Ground State-Great episode!! "After Angel visits the Dinza, the goddess of lost, Angel with Fred and Gunn find the Axis of Pythia to find Cordelia just as a thief with electrical powers plans to steal it." There's a creepy opening teaser in this episode and Gwen herself is a refreshing character who appears 2 more times in this season.

The House Always Wins-Great episode!! "When Angel, Fred and Gunn take a trip to Las Vegas, they find out Lorne is being held against his will when a casino owner has him help him steal the destinies of innocent people." This episode has stunning cinematography of Las Vegas and hilarious scene with Lorne and Fred.

Slouching Toward Bethlehem-Pretty good episode!! "Cordelia returns to the hotel but has no memory of who she is or anybody else is. Angel and the rest of the gang decide not to tell her the truth of demons while Connor suffers." While this episode has some dull parts, Wesley and Lilah's relationship makes for some great scenes.

Supersymmetry-Pretty good episode!! "Just as Fred's physics article is published, she finds out that her old professor is responsible for her being trapped in Pylea." Amy Acker gives a great performance and twist with Gunn is very shocking.

Spin the Bottle-Amazing episode!! "When Lorne performs a spell to bring Cordelia's memory back, it backfires and reverts the whole gang back to their teenaged personalities." This was one of the funniest episodes of the whole series with hilarious performances from the whole cast.

Apocalypse, Nowish-Incredible episode!! "Cordelia's memories as a higher being show her that a terrifying beast is coming and will end the world, leaving Angel and the rest of the gang to stop it." This episode is full of intense moments, a shocking introduction of the Beast, a fantastic fight against the Beast, and stunning special effects.

Habeas Corpses-Great episode!! "Angel and the gang must rescue Connor when his trapped inside Wolfram and Hart where the Beast is on a deadly rampage." The rampage sequence with the Beast is one of the most violent and brutal scenes in the show's history.

Long Day's Journey-Great episode!! "After being attacked by the Beast, Gwen returns and helps the Fang gang as they must protect the last member of five magical totems when the Beast to killing them one by one to block out the sun." Gwen was great as usual and the Beast scenes were too.

Awakening-Great episode!! "After finding Angelus alone knew the Beast, the gang plan to bring him back using a shaman to contain Angel's soul." This episode has the best fake-out of the series and it you leaves you shocked at the end when Angelus returns.

Soulless-Great episode!! "With Angel gone and L.A. trapped in endless darkness, the gang try to get information out of Angelus about the Beast but Angelus shakes up the group instead." David gives an amazing performance as Angelus and there are tons of suspenseful scenes.

Calvary-Great episode!! "Now with Angel's soul missing, the gang tries to find a way to get it back while Lilah tries to make a deal with Angelus." Lilah is great throughout this episode and we find out that not only does the Beast have a master but it's turns out to be someone in the Fang gang.

Salvage-Incredible episode!! "After Angelus escapes and the gang believes he killed Lilah, Wesley stops her from rising and goes to Faith as his only hope to stop Angelus." Eliza Dushku returns as the Faith and is flawless in all her scenes. The big fight scene with Faith against the Beast is one of the best fight scenes of the series. Also, Cordelia

Release-Amazing episode!! "Even with the Beast destroyed by Angelus, Wesley and Faith continue to track him down and plan to stop him for good." Wesley and Faith have great scenes together and the episode ends with another fantastic fight with Angelus and Faith.

Orpheus-Incredible episode!! "After Faith tricked Angelus to feed on her, they both are in a mystical coma and brought back to the hotel just as Willow arrives to re-insoul Angel like she did once before." Alyson Hannigan gives one of her finest performances in this episode as there are plenty of hilarious moments, stunning flashbacks and amazing fights.

Players-Great episode!! "After Cordelia's reveals she's pregnant, the gang researchs on what demon might be growing inside her, while Gunn helps Gwen rescue a little girl at formal house party only to find out his been tricked." Gunn and Gwen have some great chemistry in this episode and Cordelia is revealed as the Beast's master at the end.

Inside Out-Great episode!! "After Cordelia escapes with Connor, Angel and the gang look for answers on why Cordelia is now evil, which leads to Angel find Skip for answers while Connor is visited by his dead mother." Julie Benz returns to give a great performance as Darla. We learn all the events of the past was to bring this malevolent evil force to be, which Cordelia gives birth to at the end.

Shiny Happy People-Weak episode!! "Cordelia's child turns out to be a beautiful grown up ebony goddess who everyone worships as soon as they see her including Angel and the rest of the gang. But Fred soon she's her true hideous appearance." The Jasmine worshipping scenes are ridiculous and silly, there are some disturbing scenes.

The Magic Bullet-Great episode!! "Fred is on the run as the rest of the gang and the whole city continues to fall under Jasmine's thrall leaving Fred to find a way to free her friends from it." Amy Acker owns this episode as she is the only one who can save the day. Jasmine begins to become a creepy villain as her power display brings some truly disturbing scenes.

Sacrifice-Great episode!! "On their own, Angel, Wesley, Gunn, Lorne and Fred flee to the sewers to escape Jasmine's control but find a strange creature that's home world use to worship her leaving Angel to travel to that world to find a way to stop her." Jasmine becomes frightening in this episode as she hunts down the gang with her mindless hosts.

Peace Out-Incredible episode!! "With Wesley, Fred, Gunn, and Lorne now captured, Jasmine plans to spread her thrall throughout the world while Connor searches for Cordelia and Angel battles in a strange world to find a way to stop Jasmine's power." This episode is one of the best episodes of the series; the dialogue has some powerful writing, and shocking revelations like Jasmine's true intentions, her attack on Angel and her demise by Connor.

Home-Great episode!! "Lilah returns from the dead to offer Angel and the gang a shocking offer of taking over the new Wolfram and Hart giving unlimited access to all their files and facilities, while Connor holds innocent people hostage." This was a great finale that opens a lot of possibilities for next season.

Season 4 is a harshly underrated season; it's one of the best seasons of the Buffyverse in general with the writers creating ambitious and imaginative storylines, with powerful themes and strong characterizations. The Big Bads were inventive with many well acted returns from recurring characters. This is an amazing set that has the most extras so far with a season overview, specials on Jasmine, the Beast, Wolfram and Hart, and the Hyperion Hotel sets.
