Product Description This award-winning series produced by shelley duvall brings to life 26 classic fairy tales in one star-powered critically acclaimed collection. Also includes story book and game. Studio: Koch International Release Date: 09/02/2008 Run time: 1326 minutes
Amazon.com One of the first gems of the cable TV age, Faerie Tale Theatre brings 26 classic tales to life. Produced over a five-year span (1982-87) for Showtime, FTT brought together creative dramatics and whimsical writing with some of the top talents of the day. Executive producer/host Shelley Duvall (who was coming off her breakout role in The Shining) shepherds this mix of theatrical simplicity and grand storytelling for these oft-told tales ("Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Hansel and Gretel," "Sleeping Beauty," and the like) for kids and their parents. Since they are not elaborately produced, FTT may be a hard sell for some smaller members of the family at first, but most should be hooked, even older kids who may pooh-pooh fairy tales. There's always a slight twist that makes these productions fresh. The cast is amazing, especially when you think how lightly cable television was thought of in the '80s: Jeff Bridges, Bud Cort, Liza Minnelli, James Coburn, Susan Sarandon, Christopher Reeve, Klaus Kinski, Billy Crystal, Matthew Broderick, Gregory Hines, Eric Idle, Robin Williams, and Mick Jagger are some of the talented--and varied--actors appearing. Crystal's take on the smart "Little Pig" (with Jeff Goldblum as the wolf) and Williams's "Frog Prince" are two comic gems. Malcolm McDowell, right in the middle of his career high-point of playing baddies, brings flair to the Big Bad Wolf, while his then-real-life wife Mary Steenburgen beautifully counterpoints as Red Riding Hood. The casting of Vincent Price and Vanessa Redgrave in "Snow White" is inspired. Also impressive are the directors Duvall pooled: Tim Burton ("Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp"), Francis Ford Coppola ("Rip Van Winkle") Peter Medak (three episodes), Nicholas Meyer ("Pied Piper"), and Roger Vadim ("Beauty and the Beast"). You can go on for days about these wonderful tales, most totaling around the 45-minute mark, but it's better just to get the set and start wherever you'd like; you will get to the end sooner than you think. --Doug Thomas

Amazing. November 1, 2008 Imparo (Chicago IL) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
These are the best representations of the fairy tales. A must see for all children.
Living on a Dream October 30, 2008 William R. Kolbe I have been a fan since these films were first made. I had most of them on an old format which we call "needle-vision." I was a real pleasure to get them on DVD. I'd also recommend The Storyteller by Jim Henson's group.
Any Age Will Enjoy October 21, 2008 Dorothy Thompson (Thousand Oaks,Ca USA) Years ago I purchased these stories in VHS for my small granddaughter. they are wonderful and the added benefit is the well known actors in roles unlike their usual roles played. I now purchased them in DVD as I consider them to be a hand me down family treasure for future little ones in our family. Thank you Shelley Duval.
Not Sure about it yet. . . . . . October 9, 2008 Richard K. Mcpherson (TX) 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
My sister and I loved watching these episodes when we were kids. I was so excited when I found them all in this complete collection. We put in the first one and were shocked at the language and improper lines. We don't remember that being in there because if it had been, there would have been NO WAY our mom would have let us watch it. We stopped that one and watched the 2nd and 3rd episode on the Disc 1 and there was no language; they were ok. So far so good. If there is anything else improper we will try to return it.
excellent collection September 30, 2008 Katie King (New castle De) I'm 20 years old and i grew up on these movies. my mommom had all of them on tape and i watched them until they were worn out. The princess who never laughed was my favorite but i also loved snow white, repunzal, the frog prince, three little pigs. I can't wait to get these. over time my tapes eventually disappeared . I have a few i found on various websites . None of my friends have ever heard of these movies and i feel bad for them because they are classic. I cant wait to be able to show my children the movies i watched as a kid.
