For the first time in NCAA tournament history, two undefeated teams, No. 1 Maryland and No. 2 Cornell, would meet in the championship game. Cornell would be down at halftime, but battle within a goal by the end of the third period. In the fourth period Cornell would take a 12-10 lead before Maryland scored twice, including a buzzer beating goal, to send the game into overtime. Cornell would score 4 goals and take the Championship 16-13.
