Amazon.com Surf's Up is a computer-animated sports mockumentary about penguin surfing contests, which makes it stand out from the crowd of penguin movies. The story unfolds as it would on ESPN, with interviews (with penguins) overlapping footage of (penguin) surfing action, gradually unveiling the tale of Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf, Holes), a young penguin from Antarctica with dreams of winning a surfing competition--a competition named after his idol, the missing Big Z (Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski). But when he joins the competition, Cody finds his zeal for winning may not be enough to defeat the cruel reigning champ, Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader, Grim & Evil). The story of Surf's Up is typical stuff: Youngster learns to value friendship over material success. But the documentary style gives the movie a different rhythm from the usual feature-length cartoon; it stutters and skips around, dithers on side topics, and backtracks to catch up with supporting characters. Some viewers may be annoyed, but others--perhaps the more media-savvy--will find it a refreshing change of pace. (Kids who don't watch much sports, however, may just find it confusing.) Surf's Up also features the voices of James Woods (Hercules), Zooey Deschanel (Elf), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). --Bret Fetzer More Surf's Up on Amazon.com CD Soundtrack | Visit our Surf's Store | Surf's Up: Coloring and Activity Book | Stills from Surf's Up (click for larger image)

Determination! October 30, 2008 Kathy W (Baltimore) Approximately 1 hr 20 minutes, this DVD is a nice story, has great color, super clear pix, great animation, and nice music. This is a story about determination, motivation, the importance of friendship, standing up against the odds and going all-out after your dream. It's a great story for kids. I occasionally like to nourish my own inner child and also to see what movies are teaching our children (even though my child is 35.) This is a penguin story and is a take-off of the "Happy Feet" character types. When Cody Maverick was just a little pengie, he met "Big Z," the all-time best of the penguin surfers, the really big Kahouna. Big Z took the time to speak to little Cody and to give him a Big Z surfer pendant and told Cody about the importance of not giving up and going after your dreams. Little Cody was very impressionable and Big Z's words and gesture so motivated Cody that they stuck with him all his life. Cody grows up determined to be just like Big Z, even after Big Z disappears in a big wave. Now, Cody is a 17-year old teenage penguin super-surfer dude. He lives with mom and older brother. Dad was eaten by a whale some years ago, as is fairly common with penguin dads. The older brother is very negative but Cody does not let the sarcasm deter him. Through sheer determination, Cody sets out to win the big surfer contest at the Big Z Memorial Surfing Event. This story also helps illustrate how important a gesture it is when a celebrity does something positive for someone. Because a celeb is already so much in the public's eye, a kind act can go very far in encouraging others. Celebs are role models for many kids. I'm glad to see it when they are positive role models. And by the way, it's really cool how they make these animated pengies appear so "human". Nice movie and suitable for all ages.
Satisfied October 16, 2008 Marie (GA) This is my favorite movie. I never get tired of watching it. The movie arrived on time and works great. I would make another purchase from this seller.
Hilarious October 8, 2008 -> This guy <- (California) Absolutely hilarious! I'm not normally a big Shia LaBeouf fan but his voice and personality are perfect for the role. The documentary style of the film was genius. Even the soundtrack was good, especially "Stand Tall" by Dirty Heads.
Surfs Up is fun & entertaining show which looks awesome on Blu-Ray! October 5, 2008 S. Duke (West Jordan, Utah United States) This show looks awesome on Blu-Ray! I liked it much more than I thought I would. I would recommend the show to anyone.
Hilarious! September 24, 2008 Ann-Maria Fleming I love this movie. It reeks of humor and wittiness. I did not know Shia was in it until I saw it. He did an excellent job. I was laughing non stop the whole time!
