5 out of 5 stars Great Addition to Our Library - at a very good price   August 1, 2010

My wife loves this series, and when she started looking for the set and came across it on Amazon, it was sort of an instant buy decision. If you haven't seen the movie, buy this and take a couple of weekends and enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Missing parts????   July 25, 2010

I love this movie and have watched it several times over the years. When I purchased this, wanting to show it to my children, I had no idea that liberties had been taken! There were parts missing from every section of the movie. When we finished one disk and put in the next, it was like parts of the movie were missing. We had a hard time understanding what was going on because key parts of it were missing. (George and Orry fighting in Mexico, George meeting Constance and getting married, The Mane's going to visit the Hazard's, Madeline escaping her husband (don't even remember what happened!), Ashton going to get rid of her baby in the swamp, Orry's mom dying (or did she), Mont Royal burning down!!! These are all things that were not on the disks that I received. I double and triple checked and they are labeled Book I disk I, Book I disk II, Book II disk I, etc. I was so disappointed and had to keep trying to fill my kids in best I could remember.

4 out of 5 stars still waiting.   July 18, 2010
Mr. John R. Browne

i enjoyed the first book[dvd]but i'm still waiting for the full and complete story. Saw it many years ago and thought it was brilliant.
The ultimate in viewing and it should make every American proud of what both sides endured.John.

5 out of 5 stars frequent unintentional hilarity is real reason to buy   July 15, 2010

don't you love and miss the maxi-series . particularly those of the 1980's . this is a wonderful and involving story . it really is a must own . forget all the stuff folks are shoveling about the serious merits of this collection for a moment though . the funnest thing about this collection is just about everything . it's a howler . i defy you to sit down with your spouse or friends and not find a 1001 reasons to riff on this gloriously hilarious tele-film . a person with male genitals did not write an episode until the 2nd book . and it shows . it's a fun and compelling story to be sure . it's also a riot . the wonders , awe and greatness of Book 3 eclipse even the two previous "master strokes" . Bent says "GET THIS SET , SIRS"!!! and enjoy .

4 out of 5 stars Go South, young man   June 29, 2010

The big incentive to watch N&S in it's entirety is Lesley-Anne Down. What a fantastic lady. If you're only familiar with her work in soaps, this is required viewing.

The plot of N&S is at its strongest when it focuses on the bro-mance between George (Read) and Orry (Swayze). Orry is my favorite of the two, because he undergoes the most growth of any of the characters, not to mention a degree of savvyness. When confronted by the twelth successive gang of thugs to harass him once he steps off a train (it's like clockwork), Orry finally has enough and pulls out his cutlass. Swayze, you rock.

Be warned, the constant melodrama does grates the nerves after a while. The villains practically wear have neons signs on their heads blaring, "EVIL!" the minute they appear, excepting always Cooper Main (Robert Wagner), a frowning block of wood who is passive-aggressively shoved into his villany. The cartoonishly evil Elkanah "West Point!" Bent is more funny than scary. Though his equally-insane cohort Ashton (Terry Garber) is a delight thanks to Garber's wit and creepy grin.

As stated: Lesley-Anne Down is the star, especially in Book Three when her increased screentime takes the sting out of Swayze's absence. The constant cast changes can get downright confusing, also. Thank heaven Lesley-Anne stuck through to the end.
