Amazon.com essential video
Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis wrote the script, but Bill Murray gets all the best lines and moments in this 1984 comedy directed by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs). The three comics, plus Ernie Hudson, play the New York City-based team that provides supernatural pest control, and Sigourney Weaver is the love interest possessed by an ancient demon. Reitman and company are full of original ideas about hobgoblins--who knew they could "slime" people with green plasma goo?--but hovering above the plot is Murray's patented ironic view of all the action. Still a lot of fun, and an obvious model for sci-fi comedies such as Men in Black. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Who ya gonna call?   July 18, 2010

This is very worthy of a purchase. Even if you already have Ghostbusters for DVD. Regift it and get this version. So many extras, it is loaded with everything. Old and new interviews. A complete piece on the remodeling of Ecto-1, commentaries, Slimer mode, even a branching mode that details the entire process automatically. This disc has everything a Ghostbuster fan would ever want in extra content. The best version in my opinion. Loved it when the movie first came out, and still love it till this day. This is a must have for any movie enthusiast or collector.

4 out of 5 stars "We're ready to believe you!"   July 18, 2010

There's a reason why this supernatural comedy was, and still is, highly successful. It's not only because of the memorable cast and creative story, but also the witty dialogue. The dialogue is probably the best thing about Ghostbusters. Much of the lines said by the main & supporting characters are comic gold. Murray's lines are especially memorable (who could forget "He SLIMED me?"). But it's not only the characters and dialogue that are brilliant: the special effects, the ghosts, the famous song by Ray Parker Jr. However, if there's one thing that's wrong with the movie, then I have to say that Murray seems to steal the show a bit too much. He has the meatiest dialogue, and I just wished the other characters had an equal amount of witty dialogue. But that's only one of my very few gripes with this movie (the others being more trivial). Ghostbusters is a wildly entertaining comedy, and it deserves to be popular.

Grade: B+

3 out of 5 stars Classic movie but bad blu ray transfer : (   July 14, 2010

A hilarious film with a great cast as we all know. Many memorable lines that we can still quote to this day.Just an over all classic movie.I was afraid this movie would not hold up to the times. As a kid I thought it was great but I had not seen it in a long time. However it holds up very well and still is one of the funniest films ever made. The effects do not hold up over time but I'm fine with that.My main complaint is simply the blu ray transfer. It just wasn't given the treatment it deserves. Is it better then DVD yes but I have seen older movies that have been cleaned up better than this.I hope for and expect another much better looking transfer to be released on blu ray around the time Ghostbusters 3 hits the theaters. So I would say hold off but if this ends up being the only option grab it because it is still a great film and to date the best looking that you can get.The movie gets a 4 star but this item gets a 3 star.

5 out of 5 stars A great transfer for one of the best classics of all time   July 12, 2010

When it comes to Ghostbusters, there isn't much of anything to say that hasn't been said already. Dan Akyroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson put on one of the best performances of their lives. The technobabble between Akyroyd and Ramis's characters were funny, engaging, fascinating, and just fun to listen to, and Murray's dry humor fit perfectly well and was just hilarious. Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver's performances were amazing as well and Slimer was just awesome.
The transfer to Blu-ray went amazingly well. Sure there is a little grain and the 80s' effects were more visible but that was part of the movie. It was made in 1984 after all. All in all it's a must buy for any Ghostbusters fan young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant   June 26, 2010

Ghostbusters is one of the definitive comedies of the 80s, and probably the best effort put together by or for ex-SNL cast members. (some may argue that honor goes to the Blues Brothers, and those of you who argue that may be right).

The movie is funny, smart, a little sexy, a little scary, and has great special effects for the time.

There is no quibble with any performance in the film. Everyone is on target.

Ghostbusters has one of my favorite lines from a comedy ... the non-sequitir "I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought." Brilliant. LOL

Now that there's news of a Ghostbusters III with the stars of Ghostbusters now so much older, I only wonder one thing. Will they be playing the 'Busters, or the Ghosts?
