Product Description
THE COMEDY FOLLOWS FOUR MIDWESTERN COUPLES WHO EMBARK ON A A JOURNEY TO A TROPICAL ISLAND RESORT. WHILE ONE OF THE COUPLES IS THERE TO WORK ON THEIR MARRIAGE, THE OTHER THREE SET OUT TO JET SKI, SPA AND ENJOY SOME FUN IN THE SUN. THE RESORTS COUPLES THERAPY IS NOT OPTIONAL. THE GROUP-RATE COMES AT A PRICE.

Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau team up after their '90s career-making hit, Swingers, to write and costar in Couples Retreat, a romantic comedy that's heavy on the satire, but is also knowing and wry, as Swingers is at its best. Vaughn and Favreau are joined in the top-notch cast by the always engaging Kristin Bell (whose appearance with Vaughn, in a romantic tropical setting, may remind viewers of Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Jason Bateman, Kristin Davis (Sex and the City), Faizon Love, and Jean Reno. Fans of romantic comedies, and comedies of manners, will be delighted at the snappy interaction among the actors, and the zingers delivered by the script.

"You are not buying some 20-year-old broad a motorcycle!" yells Vaughn's character, Dave, to Love's character, Shane, who's having an early midlife crisis. "She's a kid! Buy her a Hello Kitty book!" Turns out that all the couples in Dave and Shane's circle are having issues, and decide to take a group tropical vacation. Ah, but there's a catch: the island getaway comes with mandatory couples counseling and bonding events. Most of the film's laughs come from cringe-worthy fish-out-of-water moments, though there are some pretty great fish-in-water moments, too: Dave begins to panic during a test involving swimming with sharks. "It's time to get the gun, and shoot some fish!"

Reno is also a standout, as the unctuous New Age-y director of the retreat, fearless in spewing half-nonsense yet having the almost admirable courage to stand behind his convictions. The film was directed with a light hand by Peter Billingsley, who starred as young Ralphie in A Christmas Story, and who has acted with Vaughn in Four Christmases and The Break-Up. And somehow, among the lunacy and the beauty of nature, friends and soulmates may just find the way back to each other. Just steer clear of the Jet Skis. --A.T. Hurley

2 out of 5 stars Forgettable I think.   March 9, 2010
A. Smith (Bay Area, CA)
I expected to like this despite the bad critics reviews. I liked "The Break Up" even though a lot of people didn't because they found it uncomfortable to watch Aniston and Vaughn fight, this was like that only not as funny (IMO of course). It started off ok but went nowhere. I guess this is what they mean by forgettable because I watched it a week ago and I can't remember what I disliked so much about it, just a waste of time I guess. If there was half stars I'd give it 2.5 because there were some funny parts... I'm rambling again.

3 out of 5 stars It was a'right   March 8, 2010
SereneNight (California, USA)
This was a fairly amusing film about several dysfunctional couples who decide to going on vacation together, unaware their pal has hooked them up at a `couples' retreat where mandatory counseling and `team building exercises' are involved. Most of the couples go into denial they have problems, although it becomes abundantly clear to everyone that they do. There are several relatively amusing bits...But most of the jokes involve double entendre and innuendo and sometimes it just isn't that amnusing, just vaguely embarrasing.

I liked it... Somewhat. I wanted to see what happened to the characters and their relationships. Minor complaint: do think they could've put at least one male hottie in this this one. If I'm going to have to watch a film with people frolicking in their shorts making crude jokes I at least one or two of the main characters to be hot! Instead all the male leads are out of shape and middle-aged. Yikes. Ah well, the same old Hollywood double-standard. *Sigh.*

This was an okay film. I'd watch it on a rainy day if nothing else was on.

5 out of 5 stars Fun light hearted movie   March 7, 2010

I gave this movie 5 stars because it is a great romantic comedy, perfect if you want to escape reality for a few hours and just laugh. I think everyone can see a little of their relationship in one of the couples. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who needs a good laugh.

2 out of 5 stars Predictable   March 7, 2010

Very predictable plot. Rented the DVD and spent most of my time fast forwarding through out the whole movie. A major waste of time, talent and money. They too were probably more concerned about hopping on jet skis instead making a decent movie. Just pass on by...

1 out of 5 stars It's just plain bad...   March 7, 2010

Having read a handful of reviews prior to watching this, my bar was set pretty low but this failed to elicit even a chuckle. The movie rapidly sways between American Pie caliber phallic jokes (which fall flat) and painfully dry Lifetime-level relationship drama; I have no idea what kind of viewer they had in mind when they made this thing. Save your time and money, and watch any prime-time half hour comedy at random, which is sure to provide the same level of entertainment. The scenery was the single redeeming item here. Watching this during a sub-zero Northeast winter provided a bit of vicarious warmth.
