Amazon.com essential video Peter Bogdanovich directed this sensitive and moving story about a teenage boy, Rocky (Eric Stoltz), who lives with severe facial deformities and poor prognosis for survival beyond childhood. The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). More than a tearjerker, the film is a genuine celebration of all that is most precious in life, even more to those who have nothing to take for granted. --Tom Keogh
Description Directed by Peter Bogdanovich, the moving and inspirational drama Mask, starring Cher, Eric Stoltz and Sam Elliott, is the extraordinary award-winning film based on the real-life story of Rocky Dennis, a disfigured teenager who overcomes pain, loneliness and prejudice through fierce determination, emerging as an outstanding young man and an inspiration to his classmates and teachers.
The Mask DVD includes the Directors Cut of the film, and as a special bonus, the original Bruce Springsteen soundtrack, which was created for the film but never released in theaters. It contains several of his top hits, such as "Badlands," "Thunder Road" and "Born in the USA.

MASK GETS A FACELIFT! ORIGINAL VERSION NOW AVAILABLE! September 13, 2008 ! MR. KNOW IT ALL ;-b (TRI STATE AREA) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I remember seeing 'Mask' on cable many years ago, but I never felt it was deep enough to be considered a great movie. This version on the special edition has restored the Springsteen sound track and some very important scenes to make this film a much more poignant experience. Cher, Stoltz, Elliott and Dern are all believable in this tragic story of the deformed youth. Stoltz who played one of Jeff Spicoli's stoner buds in 'Fast Times At Ridgemont High' and a hilarious role as Lance in 'Pulp Fiction' shows a lot of talent hidden under a ton of make-up. The DVD transfer look very good, but I noticed some softness in certain scenes. The short documentary does explain the differences in the theatrical version and this one that ended up hidden away until now. It's well worth checking out and is a much better film.
Academy Award Winning Actress Cher in Mask August 13, 2008 Little Lana (USA) 'Mask' is a wonderful movie. Great Story. I saw it again, not too long ago, on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) All the actors are great, From Cher, Eric Stoltz and Sam Elliott to all of the supporting players, including Estelle Getty as Cher's mother (RIP) --off topic, but I recently saw an interview of Cher's, where she was talking about her support of Hillary Clinton for President: Hillary Clinton went on to receive more votes than any other Presidential Primary candidate in history.
All Wrong July 7, 2008 Michael Goff (michigan United States) This is a great movie but it was ruined for me when the music was changed from bob segers to bruce springsteens, springsteens music is not as good a match to the film as bob segers was.i will be selling this special version and getting the original.
Uncover the Mask! June 12, 2008 David Colvin (Oak park IL) Rusty Dennis is the mother of Rocky, a seriously deformed but extremely intelligent and emotionally warm child. Rusty is a no-nonsense mother whose wild lifestyle is often at odds with her tenderness and protectiveness towards Rocky. She is determined that Rocky be given the same chances and happiness that everyone else takes for granted. Written by Murray Chapman {muzzle@cs.uq.oz.au}
