Gregory Nava (Why Do Fools Fall In Love?) directs this more-or-less official film biography of the late Mexican-American singer, Selena Quintanilla Perez (the film is coproduced by her father), which emphasizes sentimentality over conflict and plays down the star's horrific death at the hands of a deranged fan. Jennifer Lopez is quite good as Selena, whose roots we come to know through the story of her father (Edward James Olmos), a Corpus Christi singer who was rejected by white audiences. The script focuses primarily on Selena's inspiring rise, and it tries to muster some sense of urgent conflict over not-particularly-contentious issues (such as her relationship with a guitarist). But Olmos does a fine job portraying the elder Perez as a possessive sort, and the music and general buoyancy of Lopez's performance are infectious. The unavoidable subject of Selena's killer--a woman who happened to be the president of her fan club--is considerably and oddly downplayed. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie for a tragic story   October 6, 2008
Sam (Council Bluffs, IA United States)
I watched this with my wife not really knowing who Salena was. The acting was great for the most part(the actor playing Salena's boyfriend/husband was sub-par) and the story kept me watching more. It is a clean movie that the whole family can watch and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Film   August 25, 2008
drassie (Oakland, CA USA)
Selena is currently my favorite film. I watched it several years ago, and a couple of days ago I watched it on YouTube. Since I re-discovered it, I have been watching it on a daily basis. This is what I do when a movie or a book or a CD is extremely good. Even though I do not have many Selena songs, I still enjoy the movie every time I watch it. The reason I'm saying this is because in order to enjoy films involving a musician, not knowing many of the songs can sometimes hinder a viewer from enjoying such a film. But in this case, I still enjoyed it. An aspect of the film that keeps me watching it a lot is the relationship between Selena and Chris, which was beautifully portrayed by Jennifer Lopez and Jon Seda. It is very wonderful to see how their relationship evolved. Being the sentimental person I am, I keep rewinding scenes with Selena and Chris :D. I cannot wait to get my copy. May her soul rest in peace.

I frist saw The "Selena" Movie on HBO-The Orginal Verison.I thought it was a great film because I had not known who Selena was. Then I had bought the single disc verison of the movie-It did'nt have much on it.And now this 2 disc Special Edition of "Selena.I like the Special Features and the additional Scenes .I had sometimes accidently stumbled on seening the TV verison on TBS.It's unfortunate this verison of "Selena" was'nt digtally remastered. The Director's cut is okay."Selena" is still a excellent movie.
