On July 25, 1950, North Korean army forces surged over the border in an invasion of South Korea. Within a short time, President Truman condemned the action and sent U.S. troops to protect the south. thus started the Korean War, the bloodiest fighting since the darkest days of World War II and a defining moment of the Cold War.
