Amazon.com You may think the world doesn't need another adaptation of Jane Eyre--but you're wrong. This new and wonderfully lush Masterpiece Theatre version, directed by Susanna White (who directed the equally sumptuous miniseries of Bleak House starring Gillian Anderson), contrasts Jane Eyre's vivid inner life with the harshness of her outer life; both Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia) as the young Jane and newcomer Ruth Wilson express the inner vitality of the outcast orphan girl whose spirit captures the heart of the rough, charismatic landowner Mr. Rochester (Toby Stephens, Die Another Day). Stephens, it must be said, is far too conventionally handsome for the part, but he makes up for it by capturing Rochester's abrasive and mercurial temperament. (Wilson's looks are perfect; at one moment she seems awkward and homely, at another utterly luminous.) Jane Eyre is so often remade because the story is so potent; this production brings all of the novel's juice and passion to the fore, emphasizing the characters' sensual experience while staying true to the restrictions and mores of the period. All in all, exceptional. --Bret Fetzer

loved it December 2, 2008 Claire E. Smith (Naples, FL) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I really enjoyed this production. Lots of dark, gloomy scenes and good chemistry between the main characters
Beautiful ! November 29, 2008 Sarah Shah (Binghamton, NY / Bloomington, Indiana, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Though ashamedly I have not read the book, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It was just beautiful ! :) What woman wouldn't want a Mr. Rochester of her own. *sigh* <3 For anyone who enjoys period dramas, this is a must see! I like to watch movies with subtitles on, especially if it's an English movie in case I can't understand a word or two because of pronunciation... and this DVD, like BBC's Pride and Prejudice, does not have subtitles, grrr. Wish they'd fix that.
Best yet! November 16, 2008 Katherine the very good (michigan) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My husband and I are great fans of the BBC literature classics. Many of their dramas have been remade over the years, none more than Jane Eyre. We have enjoyed compairing and contrasting the remakes. Many well known actors and actresses have played the roles, and each has done fine work and all are quite entertaining. However, in our opinion, none come close to the quality and entertainment value of this latest remake. The cinematography, sets, wardrobe, acting and directing are first class. I'm sure this movie would have done well as a major theatrical release. If you have not seen this version of Jane Eyre, by all means, do. If contemplating purchasing this DVD for your collection or as gifts, you will be making a wise decision. This version of Jane Eyre will be the one the others will be weighed against.
Believable acting, costuming & scenery, Beautiful film! November 12, 2008 F. Young 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I adored this film. It brought the book to life and though it did make some changes to Bronte's novel, they were good and reasonable ones. I loved the acting and the costuming, both were very true to the book. I want to watch it again and again! Truly a classic that's worth buying!!

This is a real jewel of a movie, the best version of Jane Eyre there is. Filled with powerful emotions well portrayed by truly talented actors. Three cheers!
