This ambitious miniseries begins with Jack's descendant (Matthew Modine) and works its way backward to the story of the original young man and the beanstalk. Because the first Jack used that towering vine to steal a giant's magic goose and harp, an entire world was reduced to poverty and a bloodline was cursed--all Robinson men die in their 40s, and the modern-day Jack is around that age. Fortunately, Ondine (Mia Sara), a visitor from the giant's alternative reality, has a plan. If she and Jack can recover the stolen items in time, they may be able to solve both problems. The made-for-TV movie boasts top stars (including Vanessa Redgrave and Jon Voight) and Jim Henson's Creature Shop's nifty special effects. Although children younger than 10 may find the complex narrative confusing and the implied violence scary, Jack and the Beanstalk is an inventive retelling that adds new life to an old story. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Underrated Movies   December 1, 2008
Nuknuk (Springfield, VA United States)
Made for TV by Hallmark. This movie runs almost 3 hours - 174 minutes, too bad it was shot at 1:33 aspect ratio.
Nominated for 4 Emmys and won 2
PG Rated

Starring Matthew Modine, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Attenborough, Darry Hannah and Jon Voight

Such a wonderful story written by Brian Henson (son of Jim Henson and Co-CEO of the Jim Henson Company). How many Jack and the Beanstalk movies have you seen yet? But this one is really different, I guarantee you. It is long but worth every minute of it.

The movie started on a site where there is a preparation to build a luxurious casino. It was a stormy night, shown is a couple of gigantic bones which is a part of a skeleton which later was proven to be not of dinosaur origin.

Jack Robinson is a wealthy businessman who owns the company that is building the casino. He is young and looks full of life. Unfortunately, all his descendants have died mysteriously before the age of 40. A family curse that he never believed until he met his aunt. Jack believes that all the family's wealth are the result of his kins' hard work and sweat. A difficult fact that he will learn in his search for who he really is. He will meet the mysterious Mia Sara, someone who is from the world beyond the clouds, where more of his adventures will continue. The love story part is magical and wondrous.

We have seen this movie 5 times and still love every part of it. The camera effects are not your typical Lucas and Spielbergs but quite magical in its own merit.

I sent for this DVD, and when it arrived in the mail, it made noise when you shook the box it came in. I have been busy, and have not had time to complain about it till now. I want a new, good one, and don't feel it's fair wasting my time shipping it back to you.

Watched this on TV and searched for this movie and found it! Watched over and over again and love it still. Story line and special effects are great...realistic but not still imaginative.

I highly recommend this movie for all individuals who love mythology, folk tales, fairy tales and science fantasy. I was most impressed at the lack of animation and the excellent special effects. I was also impressed with the preformances of Matthew Modine and Vanessa Redgrave. The positive twist in the movie made it even more interesting.
