In the low tradition of knockoff horror flicks best seen (or not seen) on a drive-in movie screen, Steven Spielberg's sequel to Jurassic Park is a poorly conceived, ill-organized film that lacks story and logic. Screenwriter David Koepp strings along a number of loose ideas while Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm, the quirky chaos theoretician who now reluctantly agrees to go to another island where cloned dinosaurs are roaming freely. Along with his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) and daughter, Malcolm has to deal with hunters, environmentalists, and corporate swine who stupidly bring back a big dino to Southern California, where it runs amok, of course. Spielberg doesn't seem to care that the pieces of this project don't add up to a real movie, so he hams it up with big, scary moments (with none of the artfulness of those in Jurassic Park) and smart-aleck visual gags (a yapping dog in a suburb mysteriously disappears when a hungry T-rex stomps by). The transition from popular novel to Hollywood film often results in a misshapen mess, and that is certainly the case with this disastrous sequel to the fantastic Jurassic Park.
The Lost World is simply a stupid film. I won't belabor the misspent opportunities to include good sequences from the book because I know that what works well on paper doesn't always work as well on the big screen. Still, the sheer lameness of the screenplay, the horrendous 'Hollywoodification' of the basic characters and plot, is beyond belief.
The first 2/3's of the film deal with the capture of the T.Rex, which requires an entire army of what must be, quite frankly, mentally challenged mercenaries. Most of these are casually swallowed by various 'meat-a-sauruses', grenades and all. The only scene that comes close to the kind of tension from Jurassic Park is one drawn directly from the Lost World Novel.
For the grand finale, the filmmakers had the audacity to have the T.Rex run around Los Angeles, eating dogs and attacking buses! 'How did the T.Rex manage to escape in the first place?', you might ask. Why, by eating the captain and crew of the ship it was being transported on, causing said ship to crash at full speed into the dock. The preposterous notion of a T.Rex eating its way through a ships crew while out at sea is only topped by the scene showing that the captain's disembodied hands are still gripping the steering wheel. Not only that, but T.Rex apparently had the good manners to lock itself back in the hold after devouring the crew! How considerate.
Ian Malcom (Goldblum) returns to star in the sequel. Julianne Moore and Vince Vaughn join the cast and Dr.Hammond (Attenborough) and the kids make a brief appearance. Everyone else is entirely disposable.
For fans of this movie, I don't really get it, but preferences differ and I'm glad at least a few people got their money's worth. For those who haven't seen this sequel, purchase with caution. I recommend Jurassic Park III, which comes much closer to the original than this disappointing attempt.
Disapointing Sequel September 21, 2008

One of my biggest complaints with this movie was the tagline "Something has survived." So? Why wouldn't something have survived? As I recall at the end of Jurassic Park everyone just evacuates the island and leaves the dinosaurs to themselves so of course something has survived. Now if you read the book where they bomb the island back to the stone age (no pun intended) it would make sense that everything should have been dead. Then they go on to tell us that it was based on Michael Crichton's book. Could someone please tell me which parts? (spoilers) First of all the opening scene where the girl gets attacked by the compys is actually the beginning to the FIRST book. What was up with that? Then when we get into the plot the ONLY character that even remotely resembled his character from the book was Ian Malcolm. The rest of the characters were either one character's name transplanted onto another's personality or completely made up for the movie such as the ENTIRE expedition that was attempting to capture live dinosaurs. Then at the end that whole T-Rex rampage through town, what moron thought that would be a good idea? Another element that never happend in the book. O.K. I understand that movies are basically never exactly like the book, but shouldn't there have been at least ONE scene from the book included in the movie? The only one I can remember is the T-Rexs kicking the trailers off the cliff and the kicking of the trailers was the only thing about that scene that was correct nothing else. One last question: What was the high hide hanging from?

As a dinosaur lover, I first saw this film when I was five, and it still remains as MY FAVORITE MOVIE MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!! The olny movie that has come close to that is probably this summer's The Dark Knight, and other than that, the movie HAS NO RIVALS!!!!!!!! Arrggghhh!!!!! The film has tons of good actors, an EXCELLENT STORY, great acting, great script, great special effects, and great everything!!!! The trailer scene is the best, and coolest scene ever!!! Story summary: After finding out there is another island, Malcomn goes back there with his team, and another team on the way, to find his girlfriend,(the best actress EVER, Julianne Moore) but soon start chaos with the island inhabitants, the dinosaurs. The special effects are the best I've seen in a long time, and the actors are great!(Julianne Moore, Vince Vaughn, Jeff Goldblum, Pete Postlethwaite, Arliss Horward, and believe me, MANY other great actors) And, according to the number of MILLIONS that this film made, why did you all give this film such bad reviews if you went to see it so many time's? This film remains a box office CHAMPION, with an excellent directer(Steven Spielburg) a great effects guy,(Micheal Lantieri), great composer,(John Williams) great screenplay,(David Koepp) and it's based on one of my favorite novels of all time, THE LOST WORLD, by Micheal Chrichton. I have both the DVD and VHS version of this movie, it's that GOOD!!!!! I've seen it about 25 times people, I KNOW WHAT I'M REVIEWING HERE!!!! So for shame, all of you who gave this film bad reviews, for all of you who gave good reviews, excellent, and for all of you who want to see if this movie is worth it or not, it's HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Grade: A+!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure why so many people seem to dislike this film. Laugh if you like, but I think it's the best of the entire series. After watching the first one, I found myself aching to see what Spielberg could have done with the dinosaurs in a big city environment and boy, did he ever deliver in this one! I stood up and pumped my fist in the theatre when the T-Rex first appeared on the outskirts of the big city and let out a deafening roar -- serving notice to the populace that total mayhem was about to ensue. Spielberg takes us on a fun-loving, even nostalgic trip back through the Monster/Sci-Fi films of the '50s and '60s by "freshening up" the whole genre. It's a terrific fantasy that any American boy would love to watch -- nothing but good, old-fashioned fun. And isn't that what movies are supposed to be anyway? In a word, this film is "awesome"!

The first JP movie was very flamboyant, colourful and fresh. This movie feel a bit gloomy, realistic and simple. I really liked this film for it's realism, it does not have the great story the book gave us, but it's still up there with the first film. I did expect a bit more variety of dinosaurs in this film though, the only real new players are the Stegosaurusses, Compys and one brief shot of Pteranadons. I did want the movie to be even a bit more darker and would have liked more scenes at the compound and less Trex scenes. If you look at the bonus material in this dvd you get to see some great concept art that never made it to the movie. The trailer scene is one of the greatest scenes of the JP series though. The music was a bit of a let down, the drums are beautiful in some places, but overall it misses the strength of the first soundtrack. Also I'd really like to see the 2 deleted scenes added back into the movie, especially the Pete Postletwaite scene which builds a lot of character.
