Amazon.com essential video Barbra Streisand's self-absorbed remake of a 1958 French film stars Jeff Bridges as a college professor tired of sexual politics. He makes a deal with a dowdy colleague (Streisand) that they provide companionship for one another, with no thought of getting into bed. She agrees but soon becomes frustrated, the agreement only reinforcing her unfulfilled desire to have a complete relationship with a man. Mimi Rogers is on hand as Babs's striking sister, and Lauren Bacall received an Oscar nomination for her role as the heroine's selfish mother. The film is OK, but it becomes an irritating vanity piece for Streisand (who directed as well as stars). Her character constantly gazes upon her own reflection and is told at least a dozen times, one way or another, just how attractive she is. One wants to shout out, we get it already--you're pretty! The DVD release presents the film in both widescreen and pan and scan versions, plus a Dolby soundtrack. --Tom Keogh

Absolutely Loved It! July 21, 2008 M. Ruiz (Pasadena, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was surprised how good this movie was. It started a bit slow, but once you got to know the characters you really cared. Barbra was amazing and it really is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
The Mirror Has Two Faces May 25, 2008 Homer Jeff Bridges and "Babs, Dahling!" combine efforts to spark an excellent look into modern romance from an academic perspective. The two Columbia professors meet through a personal ad, written by a sexually jilted Bridges and answered by lonely Streisand's manipulative sister, after floundering through unsatisfactory relationships that left them both wanting more, much more. How do you find and maintain a lasting substantive love in a world that is aflame with "silly romantic notions"? Great supporting performances are turned in by Lauren Bacall(Oscar for Best Supporting Actress), George Siegel, Lucy Avery, and Pierce Brosnan. Marvin Hamlisch also walks away from the Oscars with Best Song. Last, but far from least, it is always a delight to watch one of Bab's directed productions in which she also acts, admire her beauty accented by her remarkable nose :-), and also hear Barbra vocalize on the soundtrack. Buy the DVD and, like me, watch it over and over and over again!
Barbara Barbara Barbara April 20, 2008 Julie Bakerville (Oak Valley, CA USA) What can I say, other than this is a soon to be classic Barbara film. She wrote, stared, and produced it! Is there any end to her talents? Self promotion? Why not!
Great Movie April 18, 2008 Kristin Thomas I saw this movie along time ago and i loved it. i still love it today. this movie is great for relaxing night after a long day at work. Jeff Bridges plays Gregory Larkin a Mathematics Professor, who has this idea of wanting to be in a sexless long term marriage. Barbra Streisand plays Rose Morgan, a Romatic Lit. professor, who wants to be in a relationship but feels that she is destined to be alone and still living with her mother, Fate steps in. Rose and Gregory meet. if you want to know the rest GET THE MOVIE!!!
Mirror Has Two Faces March 14, 2008 Kelly (Littleton, Colorado) 37 out of 37 found this review helpful
While this movie will never win any acclaim or awards, it was a light romantic comedy that hit a home run with me. I liked Jeff Bridges and Barbara Streisand together. They were funny and had good rapport together on screen.
