Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Oscar winners Marlon Brando (On the Waterfront) Anna Magnani (The Rose Tattoo) Joanne Woodward (The Three Faces of Eve) and Maureen Stapleton (Reds) lead the stellar cast of this Southern Gothic "sizzler" (Los Angeles Times) based on the Tennessee Williams play Orpheus Descending. Thanks to "brilliant" (The Film Daily) performances The Fugitive Kind "sets one's senses to throbbing" (The New York Times). Valentine "Snakeskin" Xavier (Brando) is a handsome drifter with a guitar and a past. Taking a job as a store clerk in Two Rivers Mississippi his strong and silent demeanor attracts not only the local party girl (Woodward) but also the shopkeeper's exotic wife (Magnani). Soon this explosive love triangle will ignite a powder keg of fury that could rock this small town to its very core. 5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary   November 2, 2008
Eugenia Maldonado (Mexico City, Mexico D. F. Mexico)
This film is absolutely impecable. Throughout the film, Brando and Anna Magnani are superb actors. It a duel. what I find really wonderful is that all the conversations between the two of them, that are intimate, their voices are kept in a mezzo tono.It gives really the atmosphere of complicity and sensuality that is required by the author of the play. The climate of intolerance in a small town in the USA is perfectly depicted, and the counterpoint, Joanne Woodward is remarkable. I recommend this picture as one of the most beautiful, poetic and realistic of the XX Cy. cinema. It just leaves me astonished and very satisfied of having admired a masterpiece. No flaws, no doubts, nothing that should be said is said or whispered.
Eugenia.

5 out of 5 stars "GREAT DRAMA AND TENSION"   September 26, 2008

MARLON BRANDO,ANNA MAGNANI,AND JOANNE WOODWARD,3 OF THE GREATEST ACTORS OF THAT TIME
TOGETHER IN AN ADAPTATION OF THE PLAY,"ORPHEUS DESCENDING". THE SUPPORTING CAST;MAUREEN
STAPLETON,VICTOR JORY,R.G.ARMSTRONG + THE BIT PLAYERS ARE EXCELLENT. KENYON HOPKINS'
MUSIC SCORE IS A HAUNTING LITTLE PIECE OF WORK. LEONARD MALTIN'S BOOK IS WRONG IN SAYING THAT
THE STORY GO'S NO WHERE. A SLICE OF LIFE ALWAYS HAS A BEGINNING,MIDDLE AND AN END.
A DRIFTER WANTS TO GO STRAIGHT, BUT THERE WILL BE SOME ROAD BLOCKS AHEAD.
GREAT B&W CINAMATOGRAPHY . DIALOGUE AT TIMES, IS SOMETIMES POETIC AND OTHER TIMES IS
FUNNY;"WHAT CHEW MEAN,'GO JUKIN'?'. THIS MOVIE IS A TRUE KEEPER! THIS ONE WILL BE KEEPING COMPANY WITH ;"THE MEN","ST CAR NAMED DESIRE" ,"THE WILD ONE""ON THE WATERFRONT" ,"ONE EYED JACKS","APPALOOSA","LAST TANGO IN PARIS" AND "THE GODFATHER",IN MY COLLECTION.
BRANDO,MAGNANI,WOODWARD,STUDENTS OF ACTING ,MUST GET THIS DVD!!! THANKS,TENNESSEE WILLIAMS!

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE SOUTHERN GOTHIC CLASSIC FROM THE PEN OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS.....   August 15, 2008
Richard Davis McLeod (RIVERSIDE, CA USA)

MIRIAM HOPKINS PERFORMED THE STARRING ROLE ON LIVE STAGE, IN WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL TITLE OF THIS MOVIE, BATTLE OF ANGELS IN 1941. THIS WAS THE FIRST PUBLICLY PRODUCED PLAY (IN BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS) BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS.

THIS FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION DID NOT MEET WITH ANY SUCCESS, AND WAS PLAGUED WITH PROBLEMS, ESPECIALLY THE FIRE SCENE AT THE END, THE THEATER ACTUALLY CAUGHT FIRE, AND THE AUDIENCE HAD TO FLEE FROM THE THEATER. LUCKILY, SUCH IS NOT THE CASE WITH MOVIES, AS THE SCENE CAN BE RESHOT IF THERE ARE PROBLEMS! THAT FIRST NIGHT'S PERFORMANCE IN BOSTON MUST HAVE BEEN QUITE A SPECTACLE! THE PLAY WAS LATER RETITLED ORPHEUS DESCENDING FOR THE 1950'S REVIVAL OF THE PLAY, AND FINALLY GIVEN THE TITLE, THE FUGITIVE KIND, FOR COMMERCIAL REASONS WHEN THE FILM VERSION WAS RELEASED IN 1960.

MIRIAM HOPKINS WAS CONSIDERED BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS ONE OF THE FINEST ACTRESSES AMERICA EVER PRODUCED. TENNESSEE WILLIAMS WROTE THIS IN THE OFFICIAL OBITUARY THAT WAS RELEASED AT THE TIME OF MIRIAM HOPKINS DEATH IN THE EARLY 1970'S. SHE WAS A GOOD FRIEND OF MR. WILLIAMS, AND WELCOMED THE CHANCE TO STAR IN HIS FIRST PRODUCED PLAY.

THIS EARLY WORK OF MR. WILLIAMS, LED TO HIS LATER FAME WITH THE GLASS MENAGERIE AND A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE TO ONLY NAME A FEW. LATER, IN 1959 WHEN THE PLAY WAS MADE INTO A MOVIE AND RELEASED IN 1960, ANNA MAGNANI MET THE CHALLANGE EQUALLY WELL, AS HAD BEEN THE CASE WITH MIRIAM HOPKINS IN THE ORIGINAL STAGE VERSION 19 YEARS EARLIER.

THE STORY IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPELLING EVER WRITTEN BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY ONE OF THE LEAST KNOWN TO THE MOVIE GOING PUBLIC. THE STORY DEALS WITH LONELINESS AND FEELING SEPARATE FROM THE WORLD AROUND US.

ODDLY, THIS IS THE ONLY PLAY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS ACTUALLY DEALS WITH GOTHIC SOUTHERN RACISM IN ANY OF HIS WORKS. IF YOU LIKE THE WORKS OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, WHO WAS REFERRED TO AS THE POET OF THE EMOTIONS, AND HAVE NOT SEEN THIS FILM, YOU WILL INDEED EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF HIS GENRE AND THE GOTHIC SOUTHERN STYLE OF WRITING.

REVIEWERS OF THIS FILM ALWAYS MENTION THE MAGNIFICENT PERFORMANCES OF BRANDO, MAGNANI, JOANNE WOODWARD AND MAUREEN STAPLETON, AND ARE CORRECT IN DOING SO, BUT THE ROLE PLAYED BY VICTOR JORY AS THE AILING HUSBAND OF MAGNANI WILL LONG REMAIN IN YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS, POSSIBLY MORE SO THAN THE PRINCIPLE PLAYERS. THE NATURE OF EVIL THAT CAN DWELL IN THE HUMAN PSYCHE, HAS RARELY BEEN PERFORMED SO CONVINCINGLY AS VICTOR JORY'S PERFORMANCE IN THIS FILM.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VIEWING FOR THOSE WHO CAN APPRECIATE THE THE HARSHER REALITIES OF LIFE. THIS DVD IS A VERY CLEAR PRINT, BUT UNFORTUNATELY LACKS ANY COMMENTARY, TRAILERS OR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. A SHAME, AS MANY OF THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED ON THIS FILM WERE ALIVE PRIOR TO THE DVD RELEASE, INCLUDING DIRECTOR SIDNEY LUMET, WHO DIED JUST RECENTLY.

HOPEFULLY SOME FOOTAGE EXISTS FROM ANY NUMBER OF PEOPLE REGARDING THE MAKING OF THIS FILM, AND CAN BE ATTACHED TO POSSIBLE FUTURE RELEASES OF THIS MOVIE IN A MORE COMPREHENSIVE DVD RELEASE. A TRUE SOUTHERN GOTHIC CLASSIC THAT CAN ONLY COME FROM THE PEN OF TENNESSEE WILLIAMS.

4 out of 5 stars Cryptic fire   February 18, 2008

It's sort of like Tennesee Williams decided Streetcar Named Desire was just too happy, so he wrote something even more depressing, and cryptic. But terrific acting from all involved makes this movie a must see for film buffs. This movie is on fire with emotion.

5 out of 5 stars A Golden age lost   October 30, 2007

This Film was another example of Cinema at its peek when so much more was expected from actors other than their good looks of fame. Here we see Brando in one of his early characters as a wandering young man looking for something but not knowing exactly what or where that is. Magani was also a wonderful Actress to complement his character of loss & bewilderment.
It also reflects the southern small town drama which centers around the small elite who cal the shots is such typical settings. Brando like Magani is not suited to to this enclosed setting & there can be only one outcome.
Tradagy & finally death are the sum total of such an explosive combination.
Once more Brando is seen wandering lost And still a sad figure reflecting his real; life in many ways.
