1 out of 5 stars Not real (mostly), but also not worth time   October 24, 2008

The film makers make a good point about how gullable the majority of entertainment consumers are... Guilty, I fell for their gimmick too. Had this been real, I wouldn't have even considered viewing it. But once I learned that the majority was faked, I had to see what all the hubbub was about. Utterly disappointed. If for anything, the film makers' commentaries will be worth it. Makes Eli Roth a hack who isn't really making any statements about how brainless American pop culture is, he perpetuates it.

Faces of death is a classic pseud-snuff film that everyone thought was real and many still do (See review stating this is cruelty to animals). There are graphic scenes of violence and death, but none of them are real. The fact that this got such a reaction out of people makes it a movie classic. I'm not sure how it will transfer over to blue-ray, but it may make some of the special affects used more apparent. So many believed it was real because of the documentary style approach, the manner in which it was filmed, and the gruesome nature that made viewers look away and not try to analyze whether or not what they were watching was real.

Hoax or not, this movie features extreme cruelty to animals. I saw the beginning 30 years ago and the images have never left me. Sick, mean and cruel.
