Amazon.com No other sitcom is as gleefully inventive as How I Met Your Mother. The basic setup is familiar stuff: Five charming, good-looking twentysomethings pal around New York City seeking love and happiness. But many episodes have a narrative trick. For example, when his friends try to persuade Ted (Josh Radnor) from going on a date with the doctor removing the butterfly tattoo he got while drunk, their justifications send the show careening back and forth among three interconnected flashbacks. Other episodes repeat scenes from different perspectives, or leap forward, or interrupt scenes to provide necessary exposition. None of this is groundbreaking, but it is consistently smart and clever--and when combined with crisp comic dialogue and zippy performances, it's pure sitcom delight. This is a show that manages to make a gang's in-jokes actually funny. Season Three is absolutely essential for any fan of the show, because this is the season we actually meet the title character; after two years of preamble, the mother to Ted's unnamed kids finally appears! But there are abundant other reasons to get this season, including Marshall (Jason Segel, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) buying a crooked apartment, Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) getting the yips and getting slapped, and the return of Robin Sparkles, Canadian teenybopper alter-ego of Robin (Cobie Smulders). There's a wee bit of unfortunate stuntcasting (though she doesn't embarrass herself, Britney Spears still sticks out by dint of sheer inescapable celebrity), but it's a minor flaw in an all-around superb season. Add in an abundance of commentaries, featurettes, music videos, additional scenes, and How I Met Your Mother: Season Three is clearly a must-have for fans and a great introduction for newcomers. --Bret Fetzer

Best set of the show yet. November 17, 2008 Nathan L. Baker Season 3 is probably the best season of the show. Although the show is essentially about Ted, we really get to focus more on the other characters this season which has been a great plus for me - I especially like seeing where Marshall is headed. When I first bought season 1 (while season 2 was almost finished airing) I was hooked on the show, although something was lacking. Maybe it was a little too gimmicky, or maybe it was just that I was so unused to this kind of show. The "finding true love" aspect isn't exactly new; I mean that the style of humor - the "bro" humor, if you will - that I never really paid attention to. Fortunately, HIMYM was making me laugh, quite possibly more than any other show that I've followed. I then waited for season 2 to come out (then to go on sale), which is when I was really blown away. Some definite highlights are Robin Sparkles, slap bet, and learning more about Barney's past. More laughs, more fun. Now, pertaining to this season, the characters have matured, the writing has really tightened up, and by this point the actors have really sunk into their roles - especially (in my heavily biased opinion) Jason Segal. He's one of the best comedic actors on television, precisely because he isn't afraid to do some truly wild things. The guest stars this season are great too, notably: Sarah Chalke, John Cho, Heidi Klum, Mandy Moore, Britney Spears (eh), and especially James Van Der Beek. As a capstone on the great episodes, this box set has the best special features of all 3 seasons. There is a hilarious uncensored (ACTUALLY uncensored!!) gag reel which is extremely fun to watch. It's one of the best gag reels I've seen on any DVD, and it's fairly long too, clocking in at roughly 8 minutes. Besides that, there's about 10 minutes or so of Marshall and Lily's honeymoon video, a making of an episode feature, many, many commentaries, and a couple music videos (Robin Sparkles, and Marshall's slapsgiving song).
AWESOMEEEE November 13, 2008 Roxie Hart (Virgina, USA) Season 3 was/is hilarious. You have Mandy Moore and Britney Spears both making an appearance at some point, you have a reference to Doogie Howser, and you have Robins Sparkles. Awesome. Obviously, I had already seen season 3 so I knew I was buying something I wanted. MOST DEF recommend it to ALL HIMYM fans or fans of any of the actors in it. Or, if you are interested in buying a great comedy, go right ahead! You will love it! true story.
HIMYM November 13, 2008 Will F. (Oregon) I love this show and have been a fan since the first season. The writing is great and the actors bring the characters to life flawlessly. As far as half hour sitcoms go, this one is top notch.
