5 out of 5 stars Give Me That Old Time Religion   November 28, 2007
Gerald M. Vrooman (Chenango Forks, NY USA)
Can a man be a drunk and a womanizer and still love Jesus? Can a man love Jesus and still be a drunk and a womanizer? Those of us who have known the burden of fundamentalist guilt can feel a little envious of Elmer Gantry whose conscience seems to be as leathery as Bill Clinton's. François de la Rochefoucauld once said: "Hypocrisy is the homage which vice pays to virtue." If Elmer Gantry were introspective enough to think about it he would certainly agree.

Played by Burt Lancaster, Elmer Gantry is a defrocked divinity student expelled from his seminary for seducing Lulu Baines, the deacon's daughter. He is earning a precarious living as a traveling salesman when, flat broke and down on his luck, he attends a tent revival hosted by Sister Sharon Falconer. Jean Simmons as Sister Sharon is delectable enough to lure any man down her aisle seeking salvation, and Gantry soon falls. He immediately tries to gain her confidence. Sister Sharon sees through him, but she is tired of sanctimonious people, and she is attracted to Gantry who is a likeable rogue. Gantry soon becomes her left hand man, the right being occupied by Dean Jagger as the upright Bill Morgan. The unholy trio is taking the Bible Belt by storm until Gantry leads a raid on a brothel occupied by a scornful Lulu Baines, played by Shirley Jones. Then all hell breaks loose.

Burt Lancaster and Shirley Jones both received Academy Awards for their performances. Unfortunately Simmons was ignored although her performance was as good as Lancaster's. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and I would recommend it to anyone. Be forewarned: true believers may be offended, and recovering fundies will have a hard time resisting Sister Sharon's alter call.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and Relevant   October 29, 2007
Maureen E. Driscoll (Toluca Lake, CA United States)
I'd avoided this movie for decades and I'm kicking myself for not watching it sooner. It's brilliant and amazingly relevant for today. The script is great, the performances are first-rate and Burt Lancaster is mesmerizing. I couldn't take my eyes off him. And I think I re-wound my Tivo 10 times to keep re-watching the early scene when he walks into the African American church and sings. Please watch this movie. It deserves an even bigger audience.

Sorry, but it is the Lord's Day, and I am in the Spirit, or I should say into the spirits. But these modern day wolves in sheep's clothing who call themselves various phony titles such as Reverend (the Bible says that reverend is HIS name!!!), or pastor (Paul defined the qualifications for a pastor/elder/presbyter/bishop -- all are synonyms -- and most of these wannabes do not qualify.

Pat Buchanan calls them the modern day Elmer Gantrys.

I just purchased a copy of this classic movie from Amazon.

It came out in 1960, and I doubt that you have ever seen it, but you should --- it is about a phony hypocritical preacher. The world is full of them, from Oral (Anal) Roberts to Jimmy Swaggart and probably quite a few in your own church.

Do yourself a favor and get a couple of hours of entertainment and purchase ELMER GANTRY starring Burt Lancaster and the lovely Jean Simmons.

Based on the bestselling novel by Sinclair Lewis, this tale of a lustful, larger-than-life charlatan's fall from grace owes its strength to the force of Lancaster's dynamic, Oscar-winning performance. His Gantry preaches hellfire and brimstone, but loves life--and women--with a hearty gusto that is as pure as Sister Falconer's vanity is unbecoming. Jones also took home an Oscar, playing against type in a sultry turn as a minister's daughter who became Gantry's lover. Also great is Arthur Kennedy as an atheist journalist modeled on the great H.L. Mencken. Fiery and sharp, Brooks's satirical take on Bible-thumping hypocrisy and hucksterism speaks volumes in today's world.
