1 out of 5 stars TiVO FAIL   October 16, 2008

The hard drive on the first unit I had failed within 7 months of purchase. So, you pay to have it replaced...about $50...and TiVo sends you a refurbished model (never mind that they hold the cost of a brand new model on your credit card until they receive your old one in return). The refurbished model they send out crashes and reboots every 10 minutes or so for no apparent reason...just not long enough to download any software patches that may be necessary for it to run smoothly (why they ship the items with old software, who knows?).

TiVo FAIL.

This product totally blows.

4 out of 5 stars Works as advertised   October 14, 2008

The recorder does all it is designed to do but I miss not having a built in DVD recorder as was in my previous TIVO unit. Even if it only recorded SD programming. The subscription price also seems a little exorbitant just because of the switch to HD.

5 out of 5 stars Blows Comcast's box out of the water   October 13, 2008

I have been a longtime TiVo user, so when I was upgrading to HDTV, I wanted to go for a TiVo HD. The high price had been a barrier to entry for awhile, but the $99 deal with my new Samsung TV was too hard to pass up. The TiVo, as expected does a great job of handling and recording HD content and has all of the same features that you have come to expect from TiVo. Since I'm using the TiVo HD, my Comcast cable bill did not increase when I upgraded to digital/HD since you get one multi stream cable card for free. This product is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!   October 12, 2008

I purchased this box after switching from Verizon FIOS to Time Warner cable. As owners of two Series 2 DVRs sitting in a couple of our bedrooms in our house, we decided that we had to go to the Tivo HD DVR in our entertainment room after about 20 minutes of experiencing our new HD DVR from the cable company.

Once we received the DVR from Amazon a day later, we had the cable company show up with our new Cable Cards. It took about two hours because the technician wasn't sure what to do with them. After we finally got the signal in through the Tivo, I was very happy to have a Tivo in our main TV viewing area. The features are relatively the same as the Series 2 DVRs but the main advantages were the dual tuners and, of course, HD. I eventually purchased the Western Digital WDG1S5000VN 500GB My DVR Expander eSATA so that we can add more recording capacity and had it the next day from Amazon. The extra space really made the difference for us. The Tivo Recommendations feature which allows your Tivo to record things you might like is one of our favorites. The expanded space on our new Tivo HD gives on average about 100 extra shows that we normally wouldn't catch because we don't really watch live TV anymore.

In all, I have no regrets in getting the Tivo HD DVR and would highly recommened this device for those people who want to get away from the lousy HD DVRs supplied by cable and satellite companies (unless, of course, they supply you with a Tivo).

1 out of 5 stars Gray or Partial Recordings.   October 9, 2008
I call them as I see em. (San Jose, CA)

Two different Tivo HD units I have tried reset their tuners every 4 hours which causes it to stop recording (partial show record) or to lose buffered pause time. The reset is not a full unit reset, it takes less than a minute for this "tuner" reset at which time both tuners go gray screen then come back on what ever channel tuner 1 was on (more proof of not a full reset is if you turn on Tivo's clock display they both come back up with the clock still displaying, a box reset would turn the clock display off). The reset can also cause the gray screen issue (screen is gray only on the channel you are watching, all other channels are OK). Tivo would love for me to believe I am the only one having this problem but the truth is this is common. I am going to return my unit and wait for the day/month/year Tivo finally resolves this issue before I buy another. Until then I am going to use the cable company's dual tuner HD DVR box instead.
